This has been an interestimg week for me and softball scoring.

We bat in the bottom of an inning. 1st batter lays down a bunt and is out by a whisker at 1st base. Next batter works a 2-2 count then hits a hard ground ball to the 3rd baseman. The 3rd baseman makes a good field, turns and fires a perfect throw...... to the 2nd baseman covering 2nd base. Our batter is of course safe at 1st.

She had to be thinking there was a runner on 1st base but who knows....teenage girls. I was thinking, I know that this is covered in the ATEC but I couldn't remember off the top of my head. I initially put a hit until I could get home to look it up. Turned out that I was right.

Well, the book said that throwing to the wrong base was a mental error, not a physical error. So, we gave her a hit.

I bet a lot of pitchers get frustrated with those "mental" errors... :rolleyes2:

But it's a fielder's choice, using the NFCA guide #8:

F5 thought a runner was going to 2B, but was wrong. :)

If the batter would have been put out on ordinary effort, the batter should never get credit for a hit in that situation. It's a fielder's choice all of the way.
