In all the reports I read, the only mention of any NC player was that Brett Bartles, SS/3B, A.L. Brown, had the fourth fastest time in the 60. And that wasn't a mention, it was just a listing.

Ryan Wilson from West Rowan was there.

Impact pretty much covered it. I thought all the NC guys showed well. That doesn't mean that all the hitters hit HRs or got base hits every at bat, nor did all the pitchers strike everybody out. Of all the NC kids, Brett Bartles of Kannapolis did the only really notable thing with his 60 time of 6.71, 4th over all. It had to be tough at the plate with all the quality pitching, for the most part it dominated. Patrick Adams of West Rowan pitched as well as I've seen him for his 3 innings, dispite a throwing error on a bunt. Chad Flack swung the bat as well as anybody there, but he had trouble getting in the middle of the ball, which resulted in a number of fly ball outs. It was the same with everybody, a hit here or there and a K here and there, lots of fly outs and ground outs. You have to remember, the guys in the field weren't your everyday HS fielders either, I saw a lot of great catches in the OF and a lot of great fielding in the IF. The one thing that I didn't see was a lot of "Texas Leaguers" that are common with alluminum bats, it just didn't happen, either an infielder ran them down or an outfielder did. Speed was another big factor, it was much faster than your common HS baseball game. The overall size of these kids was amazing. Although I saw a few guys under 6', most were in the 6'2"-6'6" range. Add speed to that..........well, you get the picture. One guy in particular that I remember was about 6'6", about 235 lbs, and ran a sub 7 60. This guy was a real stud, he hit a line drive that wasn't more than 10' off the ground into the LT/CF gap and got a triple out of it.

Another interesting thing was how quiet the games were. Very little or no cheering like you incounter at HS games. Every now and then you'd here a mama squeal or cheer if her son did well but that was all. Reason.........maybe it was that parents were in the minority there, literally. There were more pro scouts and college coaches there than parents. A lot of college coaches had left by the evening game on the 3rd day but there were still a lot of pro scout scouts there for the evening game on the 4th day.

In the meeting that I attended with the kids and their coaches ( all pro scouts ), I felt it was made abundently clear that this was their showcase and if you son was there, some scout somewhere thought your kid was a possible future draft pick. They really tried to make being drafted out HS sound good, but they didn't knock the college or JUCO route. In fact they said it was the right way for most players. They also stressed the mental part of the game, saying that they thought all the kids there could pyhsically play pro ball, but most fall by the way because of a lack of "mental toughness". They really stressed being honest, with yourself, college coaches, and them it will make the process of being recruited much easier.

For my son, it was an honor and a privilege to be able to participate in such an atmosphere. For me, it was an eye opening experience to see him play with players of that caliber, it really will tell you just where they stand. I'm sure that he will benefit greatly from the experience. By all means if your son has a chance to attend the East Coast Pro next year or any year, put it on your calender. It's a great experience for him that he'll never forget
