    News:

    A local group of financiers, along with Ray Durham (Harding HS graduate) is planning to build a for-profit baseball complex in the north end of Mecklenburg County. They plan to play assorted tournaments, hold camps and events for 37 weeks a year.

    They will start with 4 fields, indoor batting cage and a picnic area.

    This sounds a lot like East Cobb to me. Maybe on a smaller scale, but moving in the same direction. It would be nice to have a N.C. alternative to traveling to Atlanta.

    The north end of Mecklenburg county is field-starved. There are only 19 baseball or softball fields in the Huntersville - Davidson -Cornelius area. That may sound like a lot, but the percentage of kids playing ball exceeds most other areas. It was fine when the populatation of each town was about 5-6,000 .... now Cornelius is about 15-17,000 and Huntersville is over 30,000.

    I don't expect it to make a dent in the cramped field conditions and the towns or county will probably be building another public complex also. From April through October, there are games going on at all ages just about every day.

    The SCBL team is also reviving interest. The north end of the county is slowly developing one of the best feeder systems in the state.

    Ah, but it is still "much" cooler here in the mountains. We will host any of you all at any time. 7 pm game will be about 74 degrees at start time. I believe the high today was 79? ;)

    Speaking of North Mecklenburg baseball, check out the Copperheads site.

    http://www.copperheadsports.org/display.asp?formatoption=dynamic&key=6808&retrievemode=page

    They sponsor the SCBL wood bat team that plays at Hopewell High and are very involved in youth baseball and softball. They are actively involved in looking for fields for youth play and are constantly working to upgrade the instruction available to the kids in the area by providing tournament teams with independent head coaches. They have only been doing this, I believe this is their second year, but they appear to be doing a good job with the kids and of growing the organization.

    If any of you want to play up here where its cool, let us know. Be sure to bring a light jacket for any games after labor day! Right now its pretty HOT - almost 80 degrees.

    Unfortunately the terrain up here keeps us from building these nice baseball complexes. Hard to find enough flat land for that many fields in one place!:)

    sds70;
    I found out about it on The High School Baseball Web. There was a thread about NC baseball and had a link. I had been trying to find a place that had more about NC baseball and ended up here. Glad I did.

    BTW; I have heard rumors that one of the sponsors of the Copperheads is heavily involved with Ray Durham in putting a complex in North Meck,and if successful they would use that as home base.
