Absolutely, the worst run tournament I have witnessed in the 100's I have attended.

Communication was horrible at best. Teams reported to assigned fields...warmed up...then told to report to another field. This happened again and gain to all teams. East Cobb complex had fields not being used, but wouldn't allow tourney director to play on them. The quality of tournaments at East Cobb is buyer beware...make sure who is actually running the event before plunking down outrageous entry fees.

There were no consolation games...no championships....and just utter frustration

    On Deck O's 18-U highlights:

Ben Buchanan, Tommy Baldridge, TJ Worrell pitched very well
Kevin Dietrich made some incredible catches in CF
Chris Taylor, Drew Martin went yard with Taylor hitting 2

They finished the tournament 2-2....playing sloppy the first 2 games but finished with 2 great victories in the other 2, finishing by beating Tourney Favorite (Decatur Seminoles, who ten runned everybody) in a hard fought, intense game.

Hind sight being 20-20, the Charlotte Express had a similar experience last year. It was a rainy weekend and they only held games on one field. The kicker was, the teams that had driven long distances were not allowed to play eachother in order to get in a game. Instead, the East Cobb teams played who they were scheduled to play, on that one field, while the remainder of the teams hit in the cages and sat in their hotel rooms all weekend. I know the Express will not go back, except to play in the Perfect Game qualifier in July 7-13.

I also wondered which of the East Cobb teams would be playing this past weekend at their fields, since there were 4 East Cobb teams playing at the USC tournament in Columbia.

The Charlotte Express defeated the Barons (AL), 4-2. WP: Quinn
Express defeated the East Cobb Seminoles 11-4. WP: McCall
Express defeated the East Cobb Giants 17-5. WP: Harris
Express defeated the Patriots (MD) 8-2. WP: Ellis
Express defeated the East Cobb Astros 7-0. WP: Collins

Five of the Express players will be participating in the State Games this weekend. The remainder will be in Charleston playing a tournament hosted by The Citadel.

to Chief and SouthpawDad - I have also heard of the same thing concerning the East Cobb tournaments. It's not hard to figure out. It's called "arrogance", no shortage of that there.

Squid ... I pulled out one line from the article you referenced....

After witnessing some games and umpiring down at East Cobb this season, the actions of the Alabama team are deplorable, but understandable to a certain extent. The ECB umpires certainly provide a level of "home cooking" for the EastCobbBaseball teams .... and their perenial national rankings are a bit of a farce...

Baseball America needs to go watch some games, not just read the scores and the press clippings put out by the ECB group.

    Re: east cobb news

If that is "for real" that is utterly amazing and disgusting!

My 2 cents worth on the East Cobb tournament this past weekend..... Not being able to use the "premier" field at all certainly did not bode well for the EC organization as a whole.
It showed a lack of cohesiveness and committment . I was amazed that whomever had the "control" of the premier field was so selfish as to deny numerous teams an opportunity to get their games in due to this adults ( I'll use that term loosely) personal and political agenda.
Not being able to use that specifice field that was is in pristine condition with lights meant some teams did not play their first game until Saturday.

    East Cobb baseball

First of all, I would like to say that I agree 100% with what NCBBallFan said and also give an account of our team's experience at East Cobb. The first time I saw the complex, I was in total awe and admiration, now I can honestly say that I don't care if our team ever goes back there again for another tournament.

Our team went to East Cobb, a couple of weeks ago and like most tournaments this spring and HS baseball, we had to deal with the weather. The first day went ok, the fields were very wet but playable. As our team is walking in to prepare for our 1st game, we noticed there was a very loud, vocal confrontation between a head coach and an umpire. The coach was tossed and having just walked in, I immediately starting thinking, "Man, who is this coach and who does he think he is? This is East Cobb! You don't show your you know what here" Little did I know what we were going to run into. Other than being reprimanded for wearing our cleats during warmups, our games went pretty smooth. I will say that between games, several of our parents went over to watch the EC Astros played as if they were some major league team. I sat and watch parts of two games and noticed there were a lot of similarities in both games; 1) a lot of complaining of bad or missed calls by umpires 2) large disparity of walked batters given to EC as opposed to the other team and 3) EC would always seem to have a big inning somewhere during the game that would put the game out of reach usually precipitated by #2. This time I'm thinking it's just sour grapes, jealousy whatever, maybe these teams they're playing aren't as good as we are. This stuff was not going to happen to us.

Well, the next day comes (the day we play the Astros) and so does the rain. While waiting to decide whether we were going to play or not, I talked to two people, one was a coach from another team that cited a case where in the two games his team had played EC (at the complex), his pitchers had walked 24 EC batters. In those same games, EC pitchers walked only 2. Hmmm. I got a similar story from the parent who was from a different team from the coach I met. I was starting to wonder....
In the meantime, our team is told that our game with East Cobb is on, but it will be the only game played today in the complex. To me that didn't make sense because that would leave us with an uneven amount of games in our pool, but we didn't really care because we wanted to play these Astros. We knew we had a good team and we were confident. Well, before the game gets under way, it starts raining again and the whole day is a wash.

The next day we play our schedule from the previous day and play the Astros at 2 pm. Man, are we ready to play or what? Well, we should have known from the beginning that it wasn't going to be our day. We knew to wear our turf shoes warming up and everything, but we were surprised when the EC coach starts yelling at our team during our warmups to get off the outfield and do our drills on the warning track. It was a total attempt to intimidate our team. If we were doing something wrong, it could have been handled differently, we had watched other teams warmup and do the same thing.

Now to the game. The game starts out pretty normal. We managed to score a run in the 1st inning on a couple of hits and EC comes back to tie it up. I clearly remember thinking to myself that we could hit this pitcher and there was nothing superhuman about him. Well, we come back the next inning and score another run to take a 2-1 lead and I know what you're thinking, that's nothing. But it was the way the game was being played up to that point, good defense, sacrifice bunt to get a runner in scoring position, no errors, it was a good game..... And then the game changed, it was subtle at first. A couple of walks to EC, a clearly missed call at 1st, a couple of runs for EC. Our turn, a player gets called out at 1st when he was clearly through the bag. The next inning more of the same, more EC walks, another missed call at 1st (this one was worse than the first one), more runs. Well, you can definitely tell how the mood of our fans went. We start to give the umpires some grief and you guessed it, more walks, a balk with a man on 3rd, more runs and a ball game over. What was weird was that the umpire called the game at 9-2 and quoted a 7 run rule after 5 innings. The next day the tournament director told us we were crazy, that there wasn't a 7 run rule only a 8 run rule, but yet it happened.

Well surprisingly enough, that newspaper article wasn't about our team, but I could certainly understand if something like that broke out after our experiences. As I said before, I don't care if we ever go back to East Cobb.
