    East Meck Spring Break Tournament

Well, if you didn't make it out to Dave Jones field at East Meck today (actually by now, it would be yesterday), you missed out on a beautiful and LONG day of baseball. Weddington began the tournament coming from behind to defeat Hopewell 3-2 in 8 innings. Anthony Boone hit two HRs for the Warriors. In the second game, Butler game back to defeat Mount Pleasant 9-5 in 8 innings. Tommy Hibbard hit a grand slam for Butler. The third game was a slugfest. Independence defeated North Meck 14-11. I believe there were 3 or 4 HRs hit in that game. To finish out a long, but terrific day of baseball, Marvin Ridge defeated East Meck 3-2 in 10 innings. Byron Haag hit a HR for MR. What a day of baseball! Three of the four games go into extra innings. What a way to start off this inaugural spring break tournament. Be sure to make it out to East Meck Tuesday at 11:30 am as we start all over again. Check out the Southwestern 4a baseball website for the box scores.

    East Mecklenburg Spri

What a First Day at Coach Dave Jones Field. I don't know where to start--in 4 games there were: 9 HRs, 3 extra inning games, 1 HR with 2 outs in the 7th to extend the game, 1 Grand Slam, 1 walkoff double, a 14-11 slug fest, and 1 suicide squeeze to win in the bottom of the 10th inning. Coack Koppe has put together one heck of a Spring Break Showcase. The crowds were great, the food was tasty, the weather was excellent, the field was pristine, and best of all, the games were incredible. One of the best days of baseball I can remember seeing, and its only Day 1. Every single game came down to the wire.

You've seen the boxscores and read the updates, but you had to see the games to believe them.

Weddington forced extra innings with 2 outs in the 7th inning with a solo HR and then finished Hopewell off with a walk-off double in the 8th to win 3-2.

Butler hit a grand slam to take a 5-4 lead, but Mt. Pleasant roared back to force extra innings. The Bulldogs calmly put 4 runs on the board in the top of the 8th to put the game away and claim the victory 9-5.

North Mecklenburg and Independence conspired to drive the scorekeepers crazy, combining for 27 hits (4 of them dingers) and 25 runs. There were at least 8 lead changes as the game seesawed back and forth inning after inning. It wasn't until the 7th that Independence took the lead for good to win 14-11.

East Meck and Marvin Ridge followed with a pitcher's duel that ended regulation with the score knotted at 2. Both teams had chances to end the contest, but couldn't plate the go ahead run. Finally, in the 10th inning Marvin Ridge parlayed a suicide squeeze into a 3-2 victory.

    Like I said, What a day! :REDanceFdans002HL:

East Meck Tournament a True Showcase

It is the inaugural year for the East Mecklenburg Spring Break Showcase Tournament and if you were looking for a true showcase for high school baseball, you found it at Dave Jones Field and under the lights of Ed Bryant’s Field of Dreams. Unlike your typical summer showcase, where score, strategy and excitement take a back seat in favor of personal promotion, the featured showcase piece yesterday was the game itself in its authentic best.

On an absolutely perfect day for baseball, four games were contested. Two went eight innings before the outcome was decided, a third took 10 innings. The fourth game was a good old fashion slugfest that featured 25 runs, 27 hits, seven lead changes, four home runs, and a partridge in a pear tree.

There was a bottom of the seventh, two out bomb to send the game into extra innings before a walk off wall scraper ended it an inning later and a suicide squeeze bunt ending the 10 inning contest as the clock was approaching the witching hour and nary a little leaguer was left to run the bases after the game. You had a balk that pushed in the go ahead run and a runner hit by a batted ball to kill a rally. A game winning run wiped off the board when a sac fly turned into a double play on appeal. And what day of baseball would be complete without a grand slam, for there was one of them too.

It was truly a day of baseball celebration. The hospitality from East Meck was first rate. The concessions were at their usual finest and the stands were full all day with appreciative baseball fans.

    That was just day one!

Mt. Pleasant played North Mecklenburg in the opening game of Day 2. The Tigers are gutting it out this week, despite injuries to 5 key players. Aarron Spano and the Vikings were just too much for them today. Despite Mt. Pleasant's gritty effort, North Meckwon 9-0. The Vikings continued their torrid hitting, which included nine hits and another home run (that continues the showcase's streak of at least one HR in each game so far, 10 in total). I'll include a box score when I get back to the field.
