Student athlete signs NLI. Begins school in the fall. Team is a few weeks into Fall workouts and ready for first game of Fall season. The student athlete starts having second thoughts of school selection and considers asking coach/AD for release in hopes of retaining that year of eligibility.

When does the player officially begin the season and is committed to that institution for one academic/sports season. First official practice? First Fall season game? First Spring practice? First Spring game? I assume probably same rules apply to redshirt a season, but I don't know that either?

    OK

It depends on if you are enrolled full time or part time, D1,D2, or D3. But if you are attended the the school for 1 day you are considered on the team. You have to ask for a release and ask for permission to speak to another school in order to seek a playing spot on that team. Most sports will allow you to transfer without the sit out one year penalty but the 5 years to make 4 years does kick in at enrollment. Check out
