I had a question from one of our parents about exercises and or drills that we would be doing during practice. I just wanted to hear from you guys what or if you do any particularly exercises and or drills designed just for the pitchers DURING PRACTICE. I would think that if anything the pitchers need to work on their exercises and or drills away from practice. This way they can work within the scheme of the team practice, bunt coverage, pitching batting practice, working on throw downs...etc.
    Your thoughts? CFBAll?, Lblues?

EnkaJet......as LBlue and i dont coach hs ball, Dawgfan could probably get you an example of his routine used by their hs team. I do know that most pitchers in our area work 3 days a week before the season begins, doing the wrist snap, knee ball timing, distance pitching(strengthen)drills and alot of leg exercises(running sprints, stairwell running, duck walks). Once these are done, a 45 minute session of working on their pitches and hitting locations should be effective and useful. I think they Have to work outside of the HS practice time but see most high schools just have them work within their scheme of a team practice. During our summer practices, the first hour is dedicated to pitching(all pitchers/catchers) while the outfielder/infielders work on the throwing/fielding/situations, second hour begins with situations with all Now together working onthrowdowns, pickoffs, bunt coverage and such. Hitting live could follow once you rotate the fielders to hitting drills and then on to the live stuff. Wow......but i suggest getting them to pitch before a scheduled practice or afterwards and private lessons can be extremely benefical during this time as well! Good luck with the Jets in 2004 and keep us updated! Also hope this help and i am sure there are others who do it differently and will reply.

Thanks CFBall, hs or travel ball it doesn't matter....I was asking mainly from a travel ball standpoint. Do you ever use the bands for stretching and workouts?

    Great thread!

I have a few questions; If the pitcher is expected to do her drills and exercises ouside of practice how do you as a coach know she is ready to perform? It seems to me that pitchers are expected to come to practice and the season with all the goods (physical fitness, strength, speed, pin point accuracy, and multiple pitches with great ball movement) intact and ready to do the job. What about the rest of the team? Is the pitcher supposed to just pitch to her parents 5 days a week and not get frustrated with the others who don't have the same expectations to come with the skills, agility and physical fitness to perform 'their' job on the team because 'you do that in the scheme of practice'?! Finally do you as a coach go to your catchers and ask them to catch for your pitchers atleast 3 days a week outside of practice? If the catcher only catches during batting practice how will she be on top of her game?

Pitchers are a special breed they really need to work hard during the "off" season on perfecting new pitches, controll and velocity. During the season there is no time to work on new pitches as the mechanics of every pitch is different and at times when learning a new pitch it could affect your overall performance. So I guess that pitchers are expected to be ready to go at the begining. If I am not mistaken in the majors, pitchers need to report to camp earlyer then the rest. Catchers should also work year round with a pitcher but rarely do. On our HS team we have skills development workouts where up to eight girls can report. on our 14u travel team all three of our pitchers throw with me from early Nov to the start of practice as most dedicated pitchers do. Catchers are invited to come also.
Hope this helps answer your questions.

goducks, thanks for jumping in. I had the same questions posted to me by one of my pitchers parents and just wanted to see where everybody stood on this. I want to work with our pitchers but it is so hard to do when you have limited time to practice and you need to cover so many things. Our recommendation to the pitchers is they need to come 45 minutes early so we can go through the drills and exercises. We then will incoporate them into our practice as well. You cannot develop a good infielder or hitter by waiting to the day of practice to work on footwork, plays etc. We show them footwork and then they need to find the time to work on their own as well. We condition one day a week as well...This for everybody not just pitchers.
