Not exactly sure of the ramifications of a player verbally committing. At this point has there been scholarship money discussed, agreed on, etc. Are the player and school legally bound? What does it all really mean?

A verbal commitment means that the school/student have come to an agreement. Scholarship money has been discussed and agreed to. Provided that he graduates from HS in good academic standing, he's all set.

Under NCAA regulations, rising seniors cannot actually sign their NLI (National Letter of Intent) until this coming November. The Schools have an excellent track record of honoring the verbal agreements. It's important in the recruiting process that people know their word is their bond.

    In answer to your question:
    --------------------------
No, nothing is binding at this point because the NCAA won't allow it to be.

Yes, if the school has made an offer and it's been accepted, then they will honor that commitment 99.9% of the time... if you get into trouble with the law or something, don't be surprised if they yank the commitment, but that's about the only time they won't honor it.

A student may back out of the commitment, but the baseball community is a very small one. It will be remembered, so there ought to be good justification. You are in the process of establishing a relationship with the person who will be controlling your playing time over the next 4 years ... it would be best to get off on the right foot.

    ----------------------------
Don't be surprised if the NCAA clamps down on transfers in baseball after this year. You may be required to sit a year if cases where you decide to transfer. The movement of players will begin to be restricted, so DO YOUR HOMEWORK. If you are just now being recruited, by the time you get to college, the new transfer rule should be in effect.

GET TO KNOW THE COACHES .... TALK TO THE CURRENT PLAYERS ....

Great post Pops...and so true. The only concern with the very early commitments in years to come is this question; "Will the coach still be there when I arrive?"
