The Greater Raleigh Fall League does not keep score, there is free substitution, the coaches can bat however many they like, they rotate the defense very frequently, and if a kid is just interested in showcasing his pitching, he doesn't hit. The format works really well for the league's purpose.

At the Best in Virginia camp they play their games similar to what coach44 describes with a couple additional twists. 4 batters per inning, if you "walk", they put a runner on first and you keep hitting with a 1-1 count (but can't walk again). After the third batter they declare two outs and if no runners are on put a runner at second to create a scoring situation.

the showcase team my son played on last year played in N.C. and VA. and only allowed a pitcher to throw no more than 3 innings; if he was having a bad day, he wasn't left on the mound long and brought back to pitch again the next day. Each pitcher warmed in the pen 1 full inning before his turn on the mound. Most position players only played 3 innings or until they had an at bat. There were usually 5 to 15 college coachs in attendance and maybe 1 pro scout. The idea is to show case the players and to find the 1 college coach who likes the player enough to fill a slot. These coaches were trying to help these kids get into college. My son had a lot of fun and had a few good outings. By the way, the head coach was not necessarily in the dug out; he was sitting, answering questions, and talking with the coachs, his assistants did the base coaching. Did it help my son? He received letters from 14 colleges D1 to JUCO asking about his hs and legion stats.

THERE IS A LEAGUE SIMILAR TO THAT FORMAT USED AROUND WINSTON-SALEM IN THE SUMMER. THIS LEAGUE IS USED AS A DEVELOPMENTAL LEAGUE FOR THE SCHOOLS. FREE SUBSTITUTION ETC. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE CALIBER OF PLAYERS AND COMPETITION. A GREAT IDEA!! LIKE I HAVE SAID BEFORE, I WISH THEY HAD ALL THIS WHEN I WAS PLAYING ABOUT A 100 YEARS AGO.....

West Forsyth played in a Wood Bat tournament this weekend in Charlotte. It was an Extra Innings tournament. They finished 3-1 and had a good showing. From what I heard best they played all fall. They got three complete games out of thier pitchers. So not sure about what all went on in Mocksville. Mooresville also played in the Wood Bat tournament this weekend. There were several scouts there both days. Great ran tournament as usual.

I spoke with Cameron Maybin last week. Since no one has mentioned this, I thought I would. Cameron played for the Midlands Redskins team this summer. They are a nationally recruited Showcase team.

For those up North, you better be ready. Cameron worked out each day with the weights and has built is body from 185 to 203 of solid muscle. He led the team in hitting and broke Ken Griffey's HR record for Midland with 17...and this against the best competition in the U.S.

    Yep...mountains beware... Maybin is baaaack!!!
