Positive effect > fewer 8U & 10U travel teams. These kids need to playing rec league and working on fundamentals in the backyard rather than traveling all over God's green earth collecting cheap trophies.

    Agree 100%

High school is not necessary a predictor of any success in college. Most HS pitchers will only face 1/2 dozen hitters with college potential in their entire career (I'm not talking TB here). The called strike zone is also about 30% larger in HS ball. I'm often asked "do you think my daughter can be a college pitcher?". My response is the you'll never know until she's there.

    How fast is fast?

My daughter first attended and now has been an instructor at UNC Chapel Hill summer camps for several years. They usually have 'fastest' pitcher award. The kids are clocked at the end of camp so they are tired so speeds are usually down. When she was camper she never lost the contest but was never clocked above 62 mph. As an instructor she always get a kick out of all the 60+ mph high school pitchers who are clocking in mid-50's. Lots of moaning about the gun being wrong. Truth is there really aren't that many kids who can throw 60 mph strikes.

    Kidding?

That is a joke right? Don't want to speak for others but it became very apparent to me rather quickly that my DDs were way above 'rec ball' even at that age. We knew right away that we needed to find something else where they could play and compete with others at the same level.

That is an age where you are laying the foundation for the next 10 - 15 years and I would much rather have a TB coach teaching them.

I do agree that they should not be traveling all over the place but there are usually plenty of local tournaments they can play in.

    Dead Serious

Absolutely no reason for any kid below 12U to be staying in a motel to play travel ball. There's nothing 7 to 10 year old needs to be doing that requires travel ball. At this age it's not rocket science! Don't tell me your nine year old girl is bored playing with her friends. You may be bored watching her dominate the rec game but I guarantee you she's having fun.

Save the money. There's plenty to time after age 10 to create the next Lisa Fernandez.

I Agree!! My dd started traveling at age of ten with 12u. She was burned out at the age of 17. Wished I would have waited and pushed more at the age of 14and up. Just a lessoned learned thru lots of time and money!!There are plenty of clinics and camps that these girls can attend to get the quality fundmentals they will need to excell at the tb level.

    YEP !!

My DD played Church ball for years as a left-hander,but I changed her to right-handed,because of better avenues for her,and yet she still kicked the boys butts, so I moved her to rec ball at a local facility for another year, still dominated rec ball, and my buddy decided to start a team called the "Fireballs" , mainly local kids out of the rec league, but the better kids. After that we got a call from a prominant organization that gave us the oportunity to be its first 12U team....MAN were we awesome....players like Amanda McArthur, Jazzy Robbins, Allie Cashion, Rebekah Reaves, Jackie Marz, Lindsy Wright, Christine Bennett, just to name a few, later we added Holly Berry, Cynthia Hayes, and even Anna Maness played a season with us...we were AWESOME !!!! NOTE: But it does seem like after the 10th B-Day the kids in the beggining team were a little better attentive to our coaching !!!

    Right on.

Our DD played three years at 8u tb. Our independent rec league, in Charlotte, selected the better players to form teams in each age group, supplied them with new uniforms and away we went. Playing local tourneys only and depending on sponsorship for funding. The parents had to pay nothing for there DD's to play. This extra time practicing and playing made them all better players and helped the rec league overall. After those three years DD decided on a two year hiatus from tb but came back at 12u and is still going strong at 16u.
8u and 10u have there place in tb but to many folks lose perspective on whats important. The girls should play tb after rec is over, play local only and limit there field time to 6 or less tourneys. Learning the intricacies of this most difficult game requires play time - very simple. Skills are great but understanding all the different situations is key.
