"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

not exactly quoted, but close. When asked what he would hit off of today's pitchers, " around .280-.285". Reporter says that's all? Hell man, I'm 82 years old.

Terry Brewer always said it the best for me.

    See ball, catch ball, throw.
    See ball, hit ball, run.
Don't make it any harder than that.

My old college baseball coach used to tell us that "we were never as good a ball player as we thought we were and never as bad a ball player as we thought we were." He used to use this to express that we needed to stay on an even keel (spelling?). When we were 4-4 at the plate we were never as good as we thought we might be, but when we were 0-4 we were never as bad as we thought we might be.
