Anyone know why 2nd base is not placed inside the, "diamond" as are home, 1st, and 3rd?

Because it would not be a perfect diamond I guess?

To form the perfect diamond, the first base to be put in place is second base. The point where first and third base lines intersect is where the point of the home plate is to be. From that point, you measure thru the middle of the pitchers plate 127'3 3/8" for the placement of second base. From that point, measure 70 ft. in the direction of first and third respectively and mark, then from the point of home plate, measure 700 ft in the direction of first and third and mark. The intersection of the 70 ft. marks from Home and second give the placement of first and second. The placement of first and third should be as such that the foul line runs over the outside edge of both bases making the distance between 1st, 2nd, and third less than 89 ft.

    Southern01,

A couple of "chip shots" from "left field:"

    (1) Those of us who are pitchers' dads can attest to the fact that the dimensions of home plate miraculously shrink whenever our sons take the mound (and most of us are not bashful about pointing this out to our friend, the home plate umpire). Right?

    (2) All of us who know you would expect second base on any field you laid out to be very slightly East of its normal position.

Well Prep, my response to each of the shots:

1- I can state with pride, and unequivical certainty that no critical or disdainful words have ever exited my mouth in the direction of the umpire to which you refer. I say that knowing that our friend, "Stretchy", who occasionaly takes a position of judgement from said plate, likes nothing better than to shrink the two planes of a well defined area above that plate so as to cause extreme angst to those of us who had the gall to sire boys that would stand 60' 6" away and hurl a 5 oz. sphere violenty in the direction of his head.

2- So you're saying that I, also am in left field?

Ball one Ball two Ball three...ok son take your base

Let me see if I can set this record straight: Since I know most of you have asked your son's to throw at my head, I have had to counter with a) hiding behind the catcher and b) only calling strikes that I can see in my small window pane of the mask.....this actually allows me to stay very focused UNTIL AT LEAST mini skirt weather arrives.... and then everything becomes blurry till late October!!!

    All I know....

as a player the distance from 1st to second was loooooooooooooooooong as hell! :) whether I was fixin to steal a base or try to stretch a double it looked as tho it was 100 yards. Might just be my imagination but I am sure someone out there felt/feels the same playin the game!
