That's a big win for the Trojans. Congrats to the team and to Greg. Do you know who pitched for Independence?

    W.Meck @ Waddell

After being embarassed last night by East Meck, the Indians crushed Waddell 13-0. Seth Stringfield fanned 8 batters in the 3 innings he pitched, and Justin Gray shut the Raiders down for the final 2 innings, with 5 strikeouts. Seth also went 3-4 on the day with 2 singles and a triple, which brings him to 5-7 on the season, with 3 one-baggers, a double, and a triple. They will play Phillip O. Berry on Tuesday, and will more than likely be heavily favored.

    WP-Stringfield (1-0), 3IP, 8K
    Justin Gray, 2 IP, 5K

    Don't have any Waddell stats....

    WHS@NF part 2

    Different day, same result:

    Watauga 2
    N. Forsyth 6

The young Pioneers (one returning starter) did not embarrass themselves against one of the top teams in the state, but their maturation process only gets harder as they travel to South Meck Saturday.

Watauga started sophomores in both games on the hill and both pitched pretty well, but for one gofer ball each. Overall they are starting 4 or 5 freshmen/sophomores this year so they have room to get better in a hurry with experience.

    N. Forysth twice and then South Meck -- three top teams on the road in three days -- now that's how you start the season!

    christian vs. al brown

just to add a couple more things on the game, sherrill was very effective for al brown and made the knights look bad for the first few innings. bard was also effective pitching 4 scoreless innings, i was told he hit 90mph several times. the knights defense really bailed them out as kirkpatrick was the star at 2B making numerous key plays. a key baserunning play by k. fulginiti put the knights in a position to win and kirkpatrick delivered. good game for both teams.

tom. christian plays cardinal gibbons in a doubleheader and will face one of the best LHP's in the state, Philip Townsand. that should be a good game

    South Granville 11
    Oxford Webb 00

South Granville is 2-0 Webb 0-1.

Freshman battery of Pratt Maynard and Jeff May for the Vikings. Maynard threw a no hitter that was stopped after the top of the fifth due to the 10 run rule. Maynard made his first start as a hs pitcher and did not dissapoint by striking out 9 2bb no hits. Both baserunners were caught stealing by fellow Freshman catcher Jeff May. Soph Chris Luck homered in the game. The Vikings pitching staff has allowed 1 earned run in 12 innings this year and one hit while striking out 19 batters. South Granville will host Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday.

Jerrod Moore (JR/RHP) started for Person with 4 IP, 1 run (unearned), 3 K's and 3 BB's, Daniel Walker (SR/RHP) was the victim of 4 Rocket errors in the 5th, although South Granville hit the ball well. It was Walker's 1st appearance of the season after sustaining an injury to his pointer finger on his pitching hand. Gary Utley (JR/RHP) allowed 1 hit in 2 innings of scoreless relief. Moore also had an RBI double in the 1st.

South Granville outplayed us in this game, executing well at the plate, bunting and moving runners well, and we did not help ourselves with 8 errors. Hat's off to Coach May and Coach Ferrell for having their guys ready to play on this day.

    Person 12, Northern Vance 2 (6 innings)

    -----------123 456 7 R H E
    PERSON - 117 012 x 12 11 2
    N. VANCE- 100 100 x 2 5 2

    WP- Blake Bowes (1-0) CG (78 PIT) 3 K's, 3 BB
    LP - Jackson (0-1)

Leading Hitters - PERSON: Blaine Newton 2-4 (RBI, 2 SB), Travis Brooks 2-3 (RBI), Robbie Byrd 1-3 (HR, RBI), Jamelle Nelson 1-2 (2B). NV- Munn 2-3

The bats woke up a little for us, although we were still sloppy in the field. We did not play defense as I like it, but I will take the win, espacially after our poor performance against South Granville on Thursday, which was a real disappointment for us based on our performance. I expect better performances when we play quality teams like South Granville, who have the potential to be one of the top 2A teams in our area, but to quote Coach May at our game, "some times those things happen". We will definitely have to play much better on Monday when we face 4A power Wakefield.

    PERSON (1-1), Northern Vance (0-1)

    Piedmont 8 West Stanly 0

Rob Lyerly and Scott Estes combined on a 5 hit shut out against West Stanly. Lyerly got the win by scattering 5 hits over the first 5 1/3, striking out 5 and walking 2. Estes finished the final 1 2/3, giving up no hits and one walk.

Lyerly was also the hero at the plate, going 2-2 including a 2 run HR in the 6th. Danny Hermann had a 2 run 2B to start off a 4 run 1st inning.

Piedmont starts conference play next Tuesday, hosting Anson. Tim King will be pitching for Piedmont.
