Over on the High School Baseball Web, there have been a couple of interesting, recent message board threads about college baseball practices. It might be of interest to a lot of high school and middle school players if some of you who are currently college baseball players described your daily workout and class regimen.

Great idea...I have recently spoken with Chris Carrara @ Winthrop and the report from him is they are basically " Trying to kill me" :D

I would love for Chris, Robert, Rob and others to report how Fall practice is going. I don't believe HS players realize the physical conditioning demanded at the college level.

I know my son's statement from last year sort of sums it up. If I remember the exact quote, "I had no idea anybody could be asked to run this much, this often. So we prayed for cold weather when it was too dark and too cold to run. So we had swim practice at 5:30 in the morning, every morning."

Sounds like an apt description of basic training in the Marine Corps..... kinda hard at times....

    Hey everybody.
For those who are new to the board or who do not know, I am Robert Woodard. I am a freshman pitcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Ill do my best to post often and give everyone the rundown of what we are doing up here to get prepare us for Omaha.
Monday- I threw my first bullpen up here with all of the coaches. Trent Kline, a catcher from Penn., caught me up. He is a nasty player. I threw 30 pitches. I than went to do 100 flights of stairs. I had to do this because or our fitness test that we had on the first day of workouts. We had to run 20 50yd. dashes in scorching heat. Each one had to be under 7 secs. For each one that was done in over 7 secs. You had to do 100 flights of stairs on the stair machine. After that we had to run 2 300 yard shuttles back to back. Each one had to be in under 65 secs. I did the first one in 63 and the second one in 67 secs. I also missed one of the 50 yd dashes, so in result I had to do 200 flights of stairs. After the stairs I went back to the stadium to hang out in the players lounge with some teammates until we went to the weight room at the football stadium to lift with our strength coaches. We were in there from 430-530. Straight from there, we went out to the football stadium and had to run every row of steps in under 18 and a half minutes. This was the easiest day of conditioning that we had had to date. I completed it in 13 minutes and 30 secs. to give you a sense of how long it took. From there we sprinted up a huge hill behind the stadium. Keep in mind that we lifted legs on this day. Coach told us before we started running that we were going to have 10. Once we all sprinted up the hill, he told us we were done and we ran back to the baseball stadium. We post-stretched and that was all. This was about 6:15. From there, we went to grab a very quick bite to eat and then we headed over to the Dean Dome for a seminar on gamling. The speaker was named something like Michael Franceisse. He was formerly one of the biggest mobsters in the country. It was awesome listening to his past and everything he had gone through and how he turned his life around. The guy was straight out of the Godfather. I believe his book out now is called Blood Covenant. That lasted until about 9. After that, it was time for school work. I had a lot of it, thats all I will say.

This has been a little more than I will probably write in the future, but I wanted to attempt to explain to everyone, especially high school players, that there is no down time up here. I didnt even talk about being in class from 8-12, then I went straight to my bullpen.

I can't type anymore right now though, because we have conditioning in 45 minutes, so I gotta run. Ill try and get on later. Have a good rest of the day everyone.

I think I may have it a little easier than Woodard. First day we woke up at 5:30 to run under the stars. I know it doesn't sound like much but we he to run 3 300 yd. suicides all back to back. It's worse than you would think. Later that day we had hitting groups and lifting. That was all on the first day, which was one long day. The other day after lifting we ran forever, probably 25 different sprints ranging from 30 yds. to 100 yds. all back to back. I sill have two and a half more weeks before team practice starts and the conditioning stops for a while. Then conditioning picks back up after team practice and that goes until Christmas break. Basically, they do try to kill you, but it will all be worth it come February.

"Cc12501 is at Winthrop and Gonzo represents Pfeiffer; both local schools.

"CC," "Gonzo," and "Up:" Thanks for posting! Let us hear from the two of you who are players from time to time as the nature of your workouts change.

I know there are more college players out there who are regular readers. How about giving us your observations, as well?

Hey everyone, this is Rob Wilson, and this is my first post ever on this board. I've been reading it for quite a while, but this topic seemed like a good one to start out my posting with. I have now been up here at Davidson for three weeks and am really enjoying it. However, the baseball part of my life here is really tough and takes up an enormous amount of my time. I have two classes every morning, starting at 8:30 every day. I usually finish my classes around noon. I quickly go to grab a bite to eat because my baseball routine usually starts around 1:00. We lift on Monday, Thursday, and Friday and condition on Tuesday and Thursday. Mondays are whole body workouts, Thursdays are upper body, and Fridays are lower body. Each lifting session takes about an hour, but it is a solid hour of hard lifting. The sessions are lead by our strength coach, Ryan Martin. The conditioning sessions also last about an hour, consisting of form running, plyometrics, countless sprints, and distance running for the pitchers. In addition to lifting and conditioning, we have 4X1 workouts (4 players and one coach). The 4x1s are for position players only and take place on Mondays and Thursdays. Pitchers throw in the pen on Tuesdays and Fridays. I do both the position and pitchers workouts, so my involvement is doubled in some cases. We will start fall practice Sep. 30 and it will run until Oct. 31, ending in an intersquad 7-game "red-black" series. Right now, the workouts, lifting, and 4x1s are tiring and time comsuming, but it is all in preparation for the spring season, which I am really looking forward to.

Fall workouts: Tough but worth it.

HS Guys: Don't overlook the JUCO route. It is a great place to go to get your academics in order, as well as a place to tone up your baseball skills. There is some very very very good talent at Community Colleges, just because you are at a JUCO doesn't mean you "aren't good", Most of the guys I know at a JUCO had offers from D1's, D2's and D3's. Grades are #1, it's the key to where you want to go. I don't think I could be anywhere else right now that would make me anymore happy.

We scrimmaged the Impact team last weekend. Didn't keep score but they probably won the first game... real high scoring. In the second game, I think we might have run away with it a litle... but not real sure. Andy Partin has got one heck of a fall squad.
