The D1 College World Series is the culmination of a season-long competition whereby teams earn their way in and play extensively against one another to crown a champion. Teams are not invited in, nor does their participation depend on whether or not they have the time and money to travel. What happens in Ft. Myers can be more appropriately called an exhibition tournament (like the Ohio vs. USA Challenge that Independence played in). That's perfectly fine, I just find promoting it inaccurately as a national championship to be unseemly. Titles are fun, but people can become obsessed with them, and as noted I worry that focusing on that detracts from the opportunity for talented kids to play against other talented kids.

    Sorry....

The D1 Baseball World Series is not exactly as you say, Collin. Yes, teams do qualify, based upon conference tourney results. However, a fair amount of the teams receive "at-large" berths, which are mostly subjective selections based upon imperfect criteria by an imperfect committee of biased participants. It would not be much of a reach to say that some schools are put into the brackets based upon a fair share of politics, wouldn't you agree?

Based upon Collin's logic, do any true National Champs, World Series or Super Bowl Champs exist?

My personal opinion is that we ought to support and admire the kids who have earned the privledge to actually play the game at the highest levels. Those participants are the true champions.

Those of us who throw rocks from behind a keyboard are either beyond our prime or never had the talent to play the game well in the first place. Either way, we are all mere spectators to the REAL games that are occurring.

Long live the 2007 National Champions from Ft. Myers and the soon-to-be 2007 World Champions from Jupiter! (...and, WAY TO GO DIRTBAGS!!!)

Allow me to say that Collin is an extremely bright guy and very knowledgeable about sports. He can be very confrontational, but I appreciate that he doesn't bring that attitude to the preps forum.

He has a point and made it; Some will agree and some will not, but if you need a better explanation on one of his posts, feel free to ask him. He has never been shy to do so. But I ask this of all you, whether you agree with someone or not, everybody is entitled to be treated with respect. Otherwise people will stop posting out of fear of being chastised.

Now, if some of you would like to put some mental boxing gloves on and battle with Collin, you can find him in nearly any sports forum outside of Preps. But I caution you, don't bring your kid gloves and you better be able to back up what you say.

Perfect Game describes the World Wood Bat Association event as ONE of the very top tournaments in the fall. Doesn't seem very gimmicky to me.

Collin, I think there are a lot of people that agree with you on this subject.

A question for the group. Is it common at these events for teams to bring in kids just for the tourney? Some from long distances away? I can see the adavntages. The further a team advances, the more games they play, the more chance for a player to perform and be seen.
