    Be careful...

or Paul Harvey may list all the mediocre teams that you have lost to. lol

It appears that the college baseball landscape is changing slightly and there is not as big of a talent difference between the big programs and the rest of the pack; even more so when it comes to mid-week games. IMO

Great accomplishment, you should be pumped! Congrats to FMU and especially our baseball teammates that played with the Pineville Pioneers last Summer!

Most teams have a game or two "they never should lost" each season. That's what makes baseball so great IMO.....on any given day....guess its how a team comes back after a disappointing loss, and sometimes after big wins, its hard to come back as well, "Mr. Mo Mentum" can't be found.

That's a terrific win for Francis Marion; particularly coming in their new facility!

However, if the two teams squared off in a weekend series, the complexion and outcome of the games would probably change a lot. When each team's best three starters are paired against one another on successive days, the relative quality of the starting pitchers tends to make a considerable difference. This is probably most apparent during the NCAA regional postseason tournaments, when the greater overall quality and depth of a pitching staff like South Carolina's usually stands out against that of the regional's other participants.

I agree. It was a terrific win, and it should be celebrated.

Actually, I was posting in reaction to catcher10's assertion that FM's win and others like it are indicative of a changing landscape. Every week in college baseball, there are numerous wins like this one; and, I don't think they're any more frequent today than they ever have been. If they were, you'd see a different pattern of results emerge in the NCAA postseason tournament...and we haven't.

My post referred to the regular season, mid-week games in particular or at least that's what I intended. Post Season is an entirely different animal and I agree that the smaller programs will never have the advantage over the major powerhouse universities in this setting. The big baseball schools obviously have more depth and the coaches are much quicker to use that depth when the game could be their last. But I have also noticed that many of those same schools have to redshirt some of that depth, then lose some of those players to smaller schools the following year; thus making the recipient school more talented and competitive. I also believe that there is so much quality local talent available today that the big schools just can't grab it all up, which benefits all schools in NC / SC. Across the nation, I have no idea, I don't keep up with it.

Maybe it's just me, but with this year's successes of App State, Western Carolina, Francis Marion, Gardner Webb (just to name a few), the impressive wins and competitive games seem more frequent than in years past. Honestly, just my observations, no scientific data here. I know I'm to lazy to research, that's why I said in my first post "IMO".

But that's what I love about baseball, on any given day anybody can beat anybody! Congratulations again FMU.

Having followed college baseball closely for the past 10 years, I don't think the incidence of midweek upsets is any greater now than it ever has been. It's been a constant feature of the game the entire time; one of many that helps keep it interesting.
