Freshman Who Have Made an Impact This Year

    Aaron Bray: (UNCC 29-14) (Independence HS): Has started every game for the 49ers this year and is batting 376 with a 455 slugging% and 457 on base %. Also has 15 stolen bases. What a great freshmen year!!! :woot:

    Mike Cavasinni: (#1 Ranked UNC 39-8) (North Meck HS): Has played in 41 games and started 26. Is batting 280 with 9 stolen bases. Another great start for a freshmen.

    nick siega-riz had a good year for wingate. he started most of the games playing rightfield. hit about 290 and had his share of stolen bases and a few homeruns. not a bad start for a freshman.

    For Appalachian State University: (18-23-1, 5-13 SoCon)

    1. David Rubinstein (South Meck) - Started 33 games in left field. Is hitting .308/.542/.387 (avg/slg/ob%) with 9 doubles, 2 triples and 5 HR.

    2. Nick DeRose (R.J. Reynolds) - Started 40 games at third base. Is hitting .288/.400/.356 with 11 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 HR.

    3. Wes Borden (South Meck) - Started 26 games, mostly at first base. Is hitting .287/.361/.364 with 8 doubles.

    4. Ben Billingsley (Richmond County) - Started 41 games at second base. Is hitting .285/.488/.359 with 7 doubles, 2 triples and 8 HR.

    5. Rand Smith (South Brunswick) - Started 38 games in right field. Is hitting .274/.430/.355 with 3 doubles, 3 triples, and 4 HR.

    6. Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) - Has started 10 games and appeared in 16 games as pitcher. Has a 4-5 record with 2 saves and a 3.71 ERA.

    7. Jason Rook (Western Guilford) - Has started 11 games and appeared in 12 games as pitcher. He has a 4-4 record and a 5.31 ERA.

    Greg Miclat (JM Robinson HS) has started 40 of 43 games this spring for #12 ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers. Playing shortstop, he's only made 7 errors in his 40 games and is currently hitting .306 with 15/17 in stolen bases.

    I'll second that, I saw several of Wingate games this spring and he seemed to be playing a big part in their line-up both in RF and with the stick.

    Andy Tillman (Mars Hill College 32-27)(Sun Valley HS) Played in 39 games, started in 21 at centerfield, batted .290 ( 1HR, 1TRP,4DBL) 5 stolen bases, 420 SLG%, 370 OB%. He also started and played on the JV team. A good freshman year....

    It is great to hear about all these talented freshman who have started out their college careers so well. Keep the performances coming in beacuse it is hard to keep up with all these guys!:229031_ha

    Steven Hensley - I don't have much stats but he's a freshman at Owen from Owen High School. He's been SoCon pitcher of the week twice.

    Matt Wharton - Ohio Valley University (WV)

    Matt Wharton (Fred T Foard) and his teammates had quite a weekend in their conference tournament. Here's a report I got from his dad, Andy.:trophy:


    WOW!!!! -------- AWESOME NEWS!!!!!!----OHIO VALLEY UNIVERSITY---The Freshman has a Conference Championship and is headed to the NCAA tourney.

    Lost Game 1: 11-0 (Headed To The Losers Bracket)

    Defeated Davis & Elkin 17-5 Matt 3-6

    Defeated Shepherd (#1 Seed Northern Division) 5-4 Matt 1-4

    Defeated #3 In the Country and #1 Seed Southern Division West Virginia State 10-9 (Was Trailing 8-3 after 6 innings: (COLLEGE RECORD---- 8 Hour 54 Minute Rain Delay Later 7 Run 8th Inning Rally), Matt Wharton throws out tying run on an absolute smoker of a grounder with the bases loaded in the 9th inning to get the 2nd out.
    Matt 1-4 Hitting
    Game Started at 10:00 A.M. in the morning concluded at 10:00 P.M. in the evening.

    Defeated Concord (Game time start 10:33 P.M.---Finish 1:30 A.M. this morning) 14-5
    Matt Wharton 1-5 (Double) scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI's

    NCAA TOURNAMENT BOUND!!!!!
