Some coaches promote their players, some don't.You see batting averages, ERA's, strikeouts and RBI's in the paper,on TV and on Prepalert for some teams and others are either not there or incomplete/incorrect. These are to be called in by the coaches:banginghe and reported by the media who can't get the winning team right, at times and just want to print the story.Turning plays, errors, defense, hits or innings into something other than what actually transpired is wrong. Keeping the game @ face value is necessary(somebody wins somebody loses; thats life!), fluff and hype only hurts the player in the long run and doing a halfbaked job or nothing at all is pathetic!

Don't assume there aren't players with better overall stats, lower ERA's, more RBI's and pitchers with more speed. Some coaches tell it straight, some embellish, some just don't care. :twocents:

    agree

in our conference, the winning team has the "honor" to report to the paper. It ofter is either reported incorrectly or printed incorrectly. last week we had a game where our pitcher threw 19K's in a 9 inning loss, wasn't reported, but they did report their pitcher with 14 k's, instead of the 12 she had, credit was also given to a batter for 3 earned runs, also incorrect. As stated in earlier post in other threads "some teams don't know how to keep a true score book" putting the bat on the ball isn't always a hit, going across the plate isn't always an earned run. When we post a win (rare this year) we list the two or three top performers on our team for that game, with no yearly stats. We have a system for keeping score, three coaches sit next to the scorekeeper and every play is in agreement with each other as far as hit, fc, or error. Most highschools that we face have a student scorekeeper and I'm sure they're doing the best job that they can, but with no training, the results are ofter far from true. we can find no answer for this except hiring neutral scorekeepers for every game, but we don't have the money for this and the state won't put our for it either. so, as they say, "hang in there, the cream always rises to the top" :twocents:

    agree 100%

I agree with both previous posts on these issues. There's a lot of bad scorekeeping out there, causing a lot of false stats. Some type of standard training course for scorekeeping would be great, but I know it would be way , way back on the back burner as far as priorities.

Something else I notice with newspaper reporting of local HS sports news is the issue of using actual names when a player makes an error, OR is it reported that "the defense made an error, or the 2nd baseman (no name) made an error, or there was an infield error". I have noticed different reporters apparently have a different opinion on this issue in reporting, cause I've seen it both ways. I've even seen it both ways in the same newspaper with 2 different reporters.

    Just an observation.
