Last weeks key matchups in the "Far East"

DH Conley, after being ranked nationally slipped with two early season losses. They have seemed to have "righted the ship" with two strong wins this past week, moving them into contention as one of the better teams in the state. Their week included wins against North Pitt (6-2) and East Wayne (3-1).

Hoggard High School in Wilmington is always a powerhouse at the plate. This week they dropped a key matchup to state contender JH Rose 7-1. JH Rose was challenged earlier this week by the quality squad out of Kinston, pulling out a 6-5 victory. Late in the week, Laney toppled JH Rose 2-1.

These 3 teams have to be watched carefully out of the "Far East".

    Big East Conference

No one is talking much about Havelock. They have been impressive in early season goings against non-conference opponents.

Early Standings in the Big East 4A conference going into Conference Play this week:

    Current Big East Records:

    1. Havelock: 5-0
    2. Rose: 5-1
    3. Conley: 5-2
    4. New Bern: 4-3
    5. Rocky Mount: 4-4
    6. Northern Nash: 2-4

Best Teams we haven't heard of...

    Big East 4A

The Havelock Rams extended their record to 6-0 following a 9th inning rally against North Lenior. Havelock pulled out the victory 5-4. They are in a tough conference with J. H. Rose, D.H. Conley, New Bern, Northern Nash & Rocky Mount (Big East 4A).

Rose picked up their first loss of the season this past week. The were previously ranked #2 in the state in the BCA poll. DH Conley started out the season ranked in the top 100 nationally, but 2 early losses have knocked them back. This conference looks to be a real fight this season.

    More news from "Down East"

    Two Rivers 4A Conference

Two Rivers 4A: Cape Fear, Lumberton, Pine Forest, Smith, E. E., South View, Swett, Purnell, Terry Sanford.

South View came into the week undefeated with a 5-0 record and #10 ranking in the state. They haven't slowed down any at all. Current standings in the Two Rivers Conference:

    South View 8-0, 2-0
    E.E. Smith 7-2,1-1
    Cape Fear 6-2, 1-1
    Lumberton 4-1, 0-0
    Terry Sanford 2-3, 0-0
    Pine Forest 6-1,0-1
    Purnell Swett 3-4, 0-1

Look for South View to climb in the rankings.

    Midsoutheastern Conference

Always a power-house, Richmond Sr comes storming out of this conference virtually every season. This season the rain has taken a very rough toll on early games and all the teams are scrambling to make up enough games. It's still "to early to tell" much of anything this year out of this conference.

Current Standings (As best I can tell from afar)

    Hoke County 3-2, 1-0
    Scotland County 2-3, 1-0
    Richmond County 3-1, 0-0
    Douglas Byrd 1-4, 0-0
    Seventy First 1-5, 0-0
Pinecrest (unknown - can't find any records)
    Westover 0-3, 0-0
    Jack Britt 1-6, 0-1

One of Richmond's early losses was in scrimmage play. The # of conf wins doesn't equal the # of conf losses, 'cause I haven't found someone "on the inside" yet for his conference.

    More Eastern Teams

The Fuquay-Varina Bengal Tigers took a 10 day break (forced because of weather) between games and a 4-0 record into the game yesterday at Millbrook in Raliegh. Seems like the weather didn't bother them at all as they down'ed Millbrook 5-0.

Green Hope may be the only team that can play with them this year in that area with the exception of Garner. FV @ Garner have a rematch coming up this weekend which should be exciting.

In the Triangle-Alliance 4A, South Johnson is making a move on the tough Garner squad. SJ has raised it's record to 6-1 with it's only loss being to Cardinal Gibbons in a 1-5 score.

    Upsets from the East

    3/25 game scores

    Wake Forest-Rolesville 9, Garner 0
    WP - Emmert

East Wake 9, Green Hope 4

Green Hope is ranked in the top 10 ... it's the 2nd time they have been beaten by East Wake this season. East Wake raises it's record to 5-1.

WF-Rolesville was a pre-season favorite for the top-10 list of a lot of people so it shouldn't come as any surprise that they would be playing well. Garner has a crucial test this saturday when they face Fuquay-Varina for a 2nd time in a non-conference game.

More than anything, it seems like Garner is getting good work off the mound, but struggling to score runs. With all the bad weather, this should be no surprise to people.

    PAC 6 Conference

The PAC 6 is a 4A Conference in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Roxboro area. We rarely hear about these teams over here in the west. Riverside is probably the strongest team this season, but Person always gives a good fight.

    Current Conference Information

    School------W-L-----CWL
    Orange------2-1-----0-0
    Riverside---3-0-----0-0
    Person------4-2-----0-0
    Jordan------3-3-----0-0
    Northern----0-3-----0-0
    Chapel Hill-0-3-----0-0

    --------------------------------------------

    LATEST RESULTS:
    Wednesday, 3/19/03
    Person 3, Cardinal Gibbons 0
    Jordan 3, Rocky Mount 0
East Forsyth 7, Chapel Hill 3

    Thursday, 3/13/03
    Green Hope 8, Northern 3
    Wakefield 7, Person 1

    Wednesday, 3/12/03
    Riverside 6, Broughton 5
    Pinecrest 6, Chapel Hill 5

    Tuesday, 3/11/03
    Person 6, Northern Vance 0 (Game 1)
    Person 12, Northern Vance 2 (Game 2)
    Cedar Ridge 4, Orange 2

Smaller conferences play a longer out-of-conference schedule that we normally see in the Big 4A conferences in the west. Conference play started this week. Will try and keep and eye on this.
