    Goat Pastures are for Soccer

Sub-standard facilities are likely a big factor in sub-standard programs. A program that has potential to improve will be held back by the fact that the athletes must constantly practice and play in bad conditions. Softball is especially affected by bad facilities, even to the point of influencing athletes to change schools or switch sports. If you're forced to play on a goat pasture you might as well switch to soccer or something.

Parents in programs with bad facilities need to do what parents in programs with good facilities have already done...roll up their sleeves and get to work. Effort is what makes good facilities appear.

In response to DDD, i believe that you might have laziness confused with not knowing how, or where to start. I went through this with Hunter Huss, everything I started, came to an abrupt halt because i wasnt following set procedures. this fustrated the heck out of me. and not being able to get a straight answer from anyone, fustrated the group of parents i worked with. some actually gave up and started using their voices in the wrong way - didnt help. i had to go through three priniciples to find one who would listen and direct. now we're getting permission to build a new softball field, with lights, dugouts, restrooms, down with the boys - - - and we have to do the work, partial funding from the county, and all sweat from the parents - and not just softball, we're getting help from baseball, football, tennis and soccer parents who know the girls deserve to be treated equal. sometimes you have to find the right person to lead the herd, and often it cant be a coach, i couldnt do it, but when our booster club president's dd started playing softball, things changed. please refrain from putting people in the catagory of being lazy. it could be the case, but often its something else.

    great field....embarrasing restrooms

I've seen a lot of facilities, but N. Davidson has one of the nicest fields you'll ever see. Just hope you don't have to visit the restroom, men or womans. I have seen porta jons that are cleaner.

North Davidson is a perfect example of what an enthusiastic coach and supportive staff, parents, and fans who are willing to roll up their sleeves can create. They do something every year to make it better. They never wait until the school hands it to them (which will never happen).

Whats really sad to see is those softball facilities that look really good from a distance, but aren't fit to play on because no one lifts a finger to maintain the playing surface. . .eroded infields, outfields that would break a horse's leg.

It is sad that girls often do not have as nice facilities as the boys but if the coaches and the parents get involved it is amazing what can happen. There are many ways to raise money like others have mentioned, a very good one is to work at the Charlotte Motor Speedway - you work HARD but with a large group of players, parents, and coaches you can make some money. Our softball field has been transformed by this exact group of people. Our boosters club did pay for the lights but the many other upgrades have been work by the players, parents, and coaches. Our head coach got it all started and continues to work daily to make improvements. It is important to have a nice place to play - it certainly gives the girls confidence and makes them proud.

    OKAY ALL SOUNDS GOOD----BUT .....

Everybody has presented good input, but still off topic of thread...one more time..... why are boys facilities better than the girls??? The parents didn't help build the football stadiums or baseball fields..why is this question so difficult ??? Before you respond with the same solution...which I'm not asking for a solution...just an answer to the question...Think !!!---:39:And please don't give me the lazy parent comment...we have a field day every year ,and all but a few kids were represented by a parent...plus the men put up a batting cage that took a few days to finish....which the boys J.V. team used it before our girls without the softball coaches permission...WOW, what a slap in the face !!!!

    to answer your question

in my opinion, football and baseball have been around a lot longer than girls softball. most of the booster club presidents i've talked to have stated that booster clubs were formed to support football first and baseball second. it will take some time for girls sports to be treated equal to boys sports, but it is getting supported more every year. our facalities will catch up to the boys through hard work and supportive parents. jmo

Here they tell us that football and boys sports in general bring in more money therefore they spend more money on their facilities. I think it is a crock.
