Here is the situation,2 out runners on 2nd and 3rd.Ground ball to SS runners going on crack of the bat.SS catches grounder, when she starts to throw to 1st,runner on 2nd crosses in front. The SS holds throw and jumps back.No contact but Ump calls runner leaving 2nd out for interference.Good call or bad call?

If the runner doesnt collide with the fielder or interfere in the fielding of the ball AND doesnt intentionally interfere with the throw to 1st, it doesnt seem that the runner should be called out for interference.

But I dont understand why the SS jumped back!?! Why not make the tag?

    Bad call

Merely running in front of the fielder or jumping over the ball
while proceeding to the next base is not interference, even
though it may be distracting to the fielder or screen her view of
the ball. The defensive player made the decision to vacate her previous position at no fault of the runner. This is NOT interference because the fielder made the choice to move; the runner did not cause this movement.

I am not 100% sure, but I do not believe you have to have contact in order to call interference.

My understanding is that all you have to do is disrupt the play for interferance to be called.......at least thats what we're being told this year on the field.

    EXTREMELY HORRIBLE CALL!!!

If this indeed happened the way you described, then in no way was the runner at fault. As the rule states, the runner would have been guilty of interference if she had impeeded the fielders opportunity to make a play. The fact that the shortstop actually fielded the ball cleanly relieves the runner of any obligation, provided she did not collide with the fielder. It is getting harder and harder to understand what it is going to take, before the masses stand up and demand better training for your summertime and high school officials. You as parents are the ones putting out lots of money to give your daughter a chance at playing this sport and possibly aiding her future and the only ones I see benefitting here, are the officials and the people who put on the summer tournaments. This is just another example of someone purchasing the uniform and now is considered to be an official. Only if EVERYONE stands together, will changes occur.
