I am willing to bet next time the pitcher will ask for "time" before throwing the ball out of play.
Its all a learning process, hopefully they learned something from it.

Don't want to get into a huge debate on this. Of course umps should enforce the rules and make the right calls. I just think in certain situations, they could use some discretion and common sense. As ptichingcoach stated, there seemed to be something else going on during that game. The ump (and everyone else) knew that it was a powder keg getting ready to blow. Regardless of that, my thought is that he should have warned the pitcher that she needs to wait for time to be called. We have all seen umps give warnings on something they could have called the first time to help the girls learn.

Maybe because it was a "powder keg" getting ready to blow, he felt the need to be strictly "by the book" so as not to give the appearance of any favoritism. The coaches are there to teach, the umpires are there to officiate. The coaches should train their pitcher to follow the rules.

OTOH, I agree with fastpitchdad, I'll almost guarantee you that the pitcher always thinks about the ball being live from now on, and you know who taught her that lesson.

So as not to get into a "huge debate" about this--the subject of the original post--I'm done with this thread.

    I agree....

....that this was an odd game that went south for the opposition fast. We don't know all of the ins/outs of how team "B" day had gone. We do know that the team "B" coach is like a brother to us. Our girls bats got hot, dads got a little hot, as we all do, ump didn't like it. Ump called some sort of illegal pitch that didn't help. .......all this is part of any game. Team "B" is a well respected talented group of players and coaches. IMO, the Ump made a couple of errors that I'm sure he has learned from, and just like the pitcher learning a lesson about "dead ball" gigs, the ump gained insight on the proper method of approaching a player....ie, go to the coach first.....anyway, there was no ill feelings either side and our pitcher jumped into coach "B"s arms as we crossed the field to shake hands. That was cool!...

Coach "B", took the high road, and has our respect. Marlin
