The N.C. High School Athletic Association board of directors, at its meeting last week, approved:

    • Expanding playoff teams from 32 to 48 in volleyball, softball and baseball, starting in the 2006-07 school year.

I think this is a very good move!! Any thoughts..

It means that the NCHSAA wants more money.

It could mean that teams with barely a .500 record (or less) making it to the playoffs. Is this good or bad? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Mixed feelings, part of me says we are getting like pro-hockey and basketball almost all teams get in the mix for the playoffs. However 48 teams out of several hundred, I guess is not a big number. It could hurt teams with one pitcher as it will surely mean at least one maybe two extra games. Also, opens the door for more upsets of the better teams as they try to save pitchers etc. Never know which way the old yellow ball will bounce.

On the positive side, gets more teams exposed, more players, more coaches. Makes some money for the school systems which we hear they all need. Gives all of us more of the game we love and helps coaches evaluate all-state candidates a few more times. Hopefully when all is said and done, we will have a true champion in Raleigh! It seems the creme usually rises to the top. :blah:

The NHL only takes the 3 division winners from the East and West Conferences and one wild card team. That makes 8 of 30 teams that make the playoffs.

Why not let all HS teams opt for the playoffs?

Anyone know what the process is to get a sport changed to a different season in school athletics?
