GREATER CHARLOTTE AREA HOT STOVE LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS NAMED

HOT STOVE LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS NAMED

Two finalists have been named for the four awards to be presented at the 1st Annual Greater Charlotte Area Hot Stove League Dinner on January 26th. These finalists were selected from over 100 total nominations for the awards. A selection committee of area coaches, talent scouts and baseball observers met and narrowed each award down to two finalists.

In the High School Baseball Player of the Year contest the finalists are; Tyler Pilkington and Richie Shaffer.

Tyler, a senior, is a highly rated pitcher and first baseman for Weddington High School. He is known for his all-around performances in the biggest of games, including a no-hitter at the World Wood Bat Association Perfect Game Tournament. Tyler is the top ranked left handed pitcher in North Carolina according to Impact Baseball.

Richie, a junior, carries a powerful bat for Providence High School. Over the summer, Richie earned a position on the 2007 USA Baseball Youth National Team and traveled to Barquisimeto, Venezuela to lead the USA to a gold medal in the IBAF World Youth Championships.

Constance Orr and Kalie Lang were named as the two finalists for the High School Softball Player of the Year Award.

Constance, a senior at Butler, is a strong hitter and pitcher for the Bulldogs. She is a key member of the Lady Blues Club team and helped the team qualify for the National Championship in College Station, TX last August. Constance will play for UNC – Chapel Hill next season. She is only 16 years old and will be one of the youngest players in NCAA Division 1 play.

Kalie, a junior at Ardrey Kell High School, is one of the top pitchers in North Carolina. She is also a member of the Lady Blues and played a key role in leading the team to the National Championship. Kalie led Ardrey Kell in nearly every category last season, batting average (.471), RBIs (26), doubles (eight), home runs (three) and slugging percentage (.743). She also pitched all but one inning for the Knights.

The two finalists for the Youth Baseball Player of the Year Award are; Chase Arnold and Brett Austin.

Chase is a seventh grader at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School and plays for the Charlotte Megastars. He led his team in nearly every offensive category this season, hitting 15 home runs and recording a slugging percentage of .961.

Brett is a ninth grader at Providence High School and plays catcher. He is one of the youngest players to earn a position on the nationally ranked South Charlotte Panthers Club team. Last season, Brett led the way for the South Charlotte Middle School baseball team.

Two very talented young ladies have been named finalists for the Youth Softball Player of the Year Award, Lexi Davis and Erin Kayton.

Lexi is an eighth grader at Porter Ridge Middle School and plays first base and pitcher for the Charlotte Blaze. This past season Lexi pitched 533 outs, allowing just 54 runs, with 160 strikeouts and a 1.76 ERA.

Erin is a ninth grader at Marvin Ridge High School. She plays catcher for the Carolina Cardinals. Erin is a very strong hitter and led her 12U team to an NSA World Series Championship in 2006 while batting .504. On the defensive side, she did not allow a single stolen base last season at Weddington Middle School.
