Can I inject a comment? As a newcomer take it easy on me.

My son works out some with an x-MLB player that was good enough to play in the All-Star game and was named AL Reliever of the Year once. He is still involved as a MLB scout. His son just finished his freshman year in college. I discussed this issue with him. His feeling was to go Pro, out of HS, if you were 3rd round or higher (using third round as a general guideline for the $$$$ - it's all about the dollars). That way someone in the clubs front office would have enough money invested in you to be sure to keep track of you and push you. If not, go to college or juco assuming you have the grades and any desire to go to school and try to improve your status/value. His main concern was getting lost in the minor league shuffle. If you have no desire to go to college - go ahead and try if you are drafted late but understand the minors are tough to get out of. This x-player went to a 4 yr school and his son was drafted 5th round last year out of HS but signed to go to college.

In addtion, I talked with a friend of mine whose son recently was drafted out of UNLV in the 5th round. He had been drafted out of HS in the 5th round in California but didn't sign and went to school. He said that he had talked to numerous advisors about his son when he was coming out of HS and the general consensus was to go pro if the money was good enough to separate you from the crowd. He said that was, in general 3rd round or better. That way you wouldn't get lost by the front office in all the low dollar contracts. This person's son had the grades and desire to go to college so those were not issues.

Two very similar views from two different parts of the country. Like I said, take it easy on me.

    Good post Mo!!

With a rare exception, everybody gets treated with respect in here...glad to have you aboard

I, like most parents, would love to be in the position for my son to have a choice between college or pros...there are many factors involved that are personal in nature. Sure, there are some guidlines to follow that posters have intelligently said, but it still is a personal situation that many factors come into play.

But, as a personal decision..selfish maybe....it would take a brink truck for my son to go straight to the pros vs college. The experiences he would gain at college are priceless

great advice mvaughn. 3rd round or higher.....sign, otherwise, go to college.

the thought that "this is my only chance" is wrong. remember, if go to college and fail at baseball.......the minors are 3x harder and you would of failed there also.
