2 strikes on batter, slap hitter in the box, what constitutes a bunt verses a slap ?? Wrist through the strike zone rather than squaring..OKAY then how about a drag bunt , it could be mistakenly taken as a slap ??? If she attempts to bunt and fouls she's out, but if it appears that her attempt was a slap, and she fouls it is a foul. Sometimes I think slappers are bunting, and it is given to them as an attempt to slap,so if they foul it is a foul not an out !!!

    THOUGHTS ???

we've always been taught that for it to be considered a slap, the wrist have to be broken and an attempted swing made. however, this is one of those judgement things and we've had it go both ways. last week, we had a girl on another team stop her bat in mid swing, completely stopped, wrist never broken and waited for the ball on a two strike count, went foul, should have been out, but the ump declared that she had checked up on her swing......then she did the same thing for the next two foul balls????? its all about judgement and ya cant fight it on the field.....after a mid inning discussion with both umps, it stopped, a bit too late though.

    Slap or Bunt??

The common practice for determining slap -vs- bunt; Is more the direction of the barrel of the bat more than the wrist breaking. If the hitter uses a "Stabbing" motion we normally consider that a bunt attempt; If the bat is brought towards the zone in a "Casting" motion, then it's normally considered a slap attempt, (i.e. no bunt). And yes this does fall under the complete judgement of the umpires, you may have your catcher ask the plate umpire for help, (make it clear that you are asking if the base umpire thought it was a bunt -vs- slap attempt). Please make sure you do not argue this, because this does fall under arguing "balls and strikes", which could carry an ejection.
    GOOD LUCK!

[opinion]Why is a third strike bunt attempt ruled as an out? My guess is because at one time, the bunt was used to simply entend your time in the box by continuously fowling the ball off and that is easier to do with a bunting position. I think this reason gets lost when we start comparing the bunt to the slap which is not as easy to to do (especially when your trying to use it to extend your stay in the box). But as usual, rules evolve and the third strike slap may also get ruled into a strike but not for the right reason.[/opinion]

FWIW, what I look for is this:

Is the batter attempting to kill the ball's momentum or add to it. The former is a bunt, the latter is a slap.

And boy is it ever a judgement call.
