    Hi Langston and welcome;
    In MECA 6 tournament, yesterday there were two big semi-final rivalry games. North Meck and Hopewell, both from the northern Mecklenburg area went at it in one hard fought semi with Hopewell prevailing 12-6 in that game. In the other semi Central Cabarrus and JM Robinson went at it with Central prevailing 7-1. Hopewell and Central square off tonight, weather permitting, for the championship at UNCC.

    As far as teams to watch, Weddington High, in its first year in the mighty Southwestern 4A conference, had a lot to be proud of. They were 14-8 overall and 6-6 in the conf. In the second round of the tourney, they outhit and outpitched Providence, losing 3-1. Their soph. lefty Tyler Pilkington threw a two hitter, and Weddington had 7 hits (in spite of what the box score shows!).

    Returning are juniors Blake STickley, who led the team with 4 hr and batted over .380, as well as power hitter Joe Mangum, pitcher Spencer Terry and others. Add to that an awesome JV team that performed outstandingly in the new conference, and we've got a team to watch!!!

    a few things you might be interested in:

    - Ryan Morris, South Meck, will be selected in the low rounds of the June MLB draft. Don't be surprised if Ryan signs a professional contract instead of attending Clemson

    - You need to be the first from the Observer to interview Madison Bumgardner, South Caldwell. I believe they are in your newspaper circulation. Madison is a big, tall lefty that is on everybodies radar. Another potential '07 1st round draft pick. He is a rare baseball player

    - If you wanted to take a little time, a good story would be the number of kids that have signed D1 or any college between the years '02 to '06 in the Charlotte area. The numbers are startling... which shows the astonishing increase in the talent level in 4 years. You might even opin why this has happened. If you need the numbers we can help.

    I'll add more later

    the 2002-2003 CCS teams could see 3, maybe 4 players drafted in the next 2 years: D Bard, P Bennett, C Carrara and R Fronk

    Update

    An update on Will Dicus's story... Apparently his last examination showed that he is cancer free for now! He came to practice nearly every day this year even though sometimes it was right after a chemo treatment. He is limited to pitching and cannot run right now, but when his teammates went through "conditioning" he always insisted on doing pushups and situps while they ran. The Watauga JV had a deep pitching staff, but Will did get to pitch in one game, finishing off a shutout against North Forsyth with 2/3 of an inning. He has a chance to be a big part of the JV pitching staff as a sophomore. Most people are completely wiped out by cancer treatments, so it was really amazing to see him throw a 50-pitch bullpen session right after chemo. What will be even more amazing is if he comes all the way back next year and gets to really contribute to the team's succes.

    I should add...

    Will has had ONE clean scan, and apparently you need clean scans for 5 years to be safely out of the woods, but it's still great news. Also adding to the human interest story, with his own health curtailing his baseball activities, he's continued to stay involved by helping coach a local little league team.
