The Red Tornadoes traveled to Saw Mills Saturday night for a scrimmage against Class 4A South Caldwell. The Tornado varsity won both portions of the scrimmage, scoring a total of six touchdowns while limiting the Spartans to a single score. The Tornado JV also fared well against the Spartans.

The first portion of the scrimmage consisted of a controlled scenario in which each team got 10 offensive plays from the other team's 40 yard line. After a nice run by junior tailback Darrien "the Breeze" Burch that put Hickory on the Spartan goal line, Austin "Bruiser" Johnson, also a junior, plowed over the line for Hickory's first touchdown of the evening. This was followed by junior quarterback Jordan Wilson's sweet touchdown pass to senior tight end Todd Williams. Wilson also ran for a touchdown as Hickory won the controlled scrimmage by the score of 3-1.

In the game-situation portion of the scrimmage, the Spartans were hanging tough against the Tornadoes until senior cornerback Alfred McCorkle picked off a Spartan pass and outraced everybody to the end zone. Not long after this, Burch broke several tackles before getting clear and scoring on an 80-yard romp. Having failed to score against the Hickory defense, a tired Spartan offense gave up another score on the final play of the night when the ball was knocked loose and recovered by Bruiser Johnson, who went all the way for a 70-yard touchdown. :ylsuper:

Although there is still much work to be done before the young Tornadoes are ready for the regular season, tonight's action was very encouraging. The one blemish on the night was the shoulder injury of senior quarterback/safety Erik Kendall, who may be out for at least a month. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery!

The Tornadoes will host the Freedom Patriots in a combination practice/scrimmage on Tuesday evening at 6:00.

G&G, or anyone from South. How did the Spartans look? Did they lose a lot and are trying to fit the pieces back together, or was Hickory just that much better??

Yeah right! It's sad when you can't tell the difference! South couldn't run the football, which is what they wanted to do. It's not like Hickory pulled out all the stops to accomplish this, either. I wasn't bragging...just reporting the facts. All of our kids got in on the action. Beating up on South is a way of life for Hickory. Deal with that. :woot:

Hickory may not have pulled out all the stops, but felt it neccessary to ride Austin Johnson like a wet mule. Did he ever get to take a knee during the entire scrimmage?
At least Caldwell treated this game like a scrimmage and played everyone.

Don't feel bad for the Bruiser. He was just ONE of the Hickory guys that MADE South look like crap. So sorry, but I've gotta wave the flag at you one more time... :77321_bs:
