Based on your experience, what makes the difference between a good or bad booster club? Also, what are some the problems booster clubs have encountered and what have been some of the successes?

    Booster clubs

Our highschool booster club is about as good as we can get for an inner city highschool. We have parents representing every sport, our membership is about 100 parents which pales compared to when huss was at its peak in the 60's and 70's, but much better than three years ago. Our money is made on the football, soccer, baseball and basketball consession stands and with bbq sales, athletic book and donations. In my four years of being in the booster club, the predominate factor seems to be the president. No leadership, no money. But the worst thing that a booster club can do is show favoritism to any extreme. We spread the money out to all sports (even cheerleading, dd says thats not a sport???) We utilize the three bid system, no favorites at all and this has really saved us a bunch of money as far as shirt, hats, etc. We have a great bunch of parents, willing to work for the better of the school, and that's really the secret as I see it. Now, we don't have the money like ashbrook or forestview, but we have raised over $40K this year and that goes a long way to improve things in our athletic system. Huss improves every year, and I personally think that the booster club sending teams to camps has really helped it get there. Just my opinion.

Our booster club only requires a $20.00 per year membership charge and the insane desire to sweat to death in the concession stand or, selling 50/50 tickets.

A good booster club is one that supports all sports and all athletes, not just the football team.

    at new high schools

at a new HS less than 5 yr's old, we have struggled w/ booster club. Can only get a few people involved & then all the work is on those few people.

do you get interest & cooperation from coaches?
about how many people are in booster club & regularly attend mtg's & help out w/ functions?

    thanks

we are a 3a school of about 1000 kids, our athletic director and the principle attend the booster club meetings monthly. four years ago, we had meetings with the club officers only, no one else would attend. we agressively sought membership at the freshman orientation, at football/basketball/baseball games and had the coaches push membership when parents complained about other sports getting all the money. our last booster club meeting had about 28 people attend in addition to the officers.(not bad considering football was over). during football, we would regularly have about 50+ people. we decided to give a discount on tickets to all events with the purchase of the boosterclub membership, with the understanding that they would have to "work" at least 2 football games in the concession stand or selling 50/50 tickets. (advice on 50/50 tickets - let your tennis/softball/basketball/cheerleaders/soccer teams sell the tickets in the stands - something about a girl selling tickets - increases you income by 40% on an average - studied it last year). like everything else in life, you have to have a hook to sell something - people just dont want to volunteer for anything anymore, too busy.

    Booster Clubs

Athletic booster clubs that are not incorporated can have as many members as they want to. If the club is incorporated then there are strick guidelines that have to be followed when it comes to their membership. There are advantages to being incorporated.

    questions

hey Cheeze105: Booster club membership?? you mean at your school you actually can get people to pay a membership fee to join the athletic booster club? at our school, it's free to be a booster club member, but then we have few regular participants. if we charged a membership fee, we'd probably have less "members"!!

    Yep

Yes, we charge $20.00 per member for the honor? of being in the booster club, it's my understanding that all highschools in our county charge for the priviledge??? It does come with some perks though, free admitance to all games in return for some work in the consession stand, ability to vote on how money is spent, ability to put money where your kids are. I believe that we could get more people involved if the booster club was free, but i also understand that some booster clubs are by "invitation" only, that seems like bull to me.
