Question for all parents concerning control..Does high school coaches have too much control of our kids decisions on their futures? Just heard the other day that a certain kid was told by her high school coach that she had to play on another organization and play up...now the question to me who is making the call on this kids life, and who will assume the responsibility if this move of the high school coach doesn't work out ??? I would get some type of comittment from that high school coach that he would do everything in his power to make sure this move would benefit my child toward her college goals........What's your thoughts ????

    Say what???

If the insinuation was to either play for this team or else, I would find a way to move my dd to another school.... Highschool coaches shouldnt have the power to dictate what summer team your dd plays on. I do both, hs and travel ball, and wouldnt think of telling any of my hs players to play for this person or else. I have urged them to play travel ball, suggested teams, found a few homes for some of my freshman of last year and rising freshman for next year. But, I couldnt do that, I'm just happy to have seven or eight playing travel ball to help improve their skills and have a good time for the summer/fall.:twocents:

He can and should only advise what he thinks/feels is in her best interest period to develop and get better or perhaps encourage for her benefit to "tell" don t think so and don t let it happen...I'd question this coahes leadership annnnnnnnnnnd authority if this is the case... Good luck mom dad softballerrrrrrrrrrr... INHO

Agree with the previous two posts to a degree. I would be careful and make sure you know what the coach said exactly before jumping to conclusions, AND was it said to the player of the parents and player... Sometimes the kids can deliver information a little differently than it was actually worded. The other thing I'd look at is the coach, his experience, knowledge and intentions. Also the coach's character is a factor. If you believe the coach to have the player's best interest at heart and he actually knows what the player's future goals are, that is something to consider and why he may have made that suggestion or statement to the player. Try to see it positively instead first. Take it as a compliment that the coach even thinks the kid can play up with better competition, and when you look at it that way, it might not be such a bad thing. I agree mostly with Cheeze's comment; we encourage our kids as well and will help them find homes, make suggestions on teams, etc. We never have told a kid they must play or else, but I am not sure that this coach you are talking about has done that either based on what you said in your thread. Good luck with all that. If nothing else, just ask the coach himself what he meant or how the conversation took place. I see that you wrote that you had "heard that the high school coach" told the player...I would just ask or have the family ask to clarfiy what really happened if nothing else. :twocents:

sounds to me like a suggestion rather than an ultimatum...

A lot of unknowns in this post. How old is the kid but more importantly what grade will she be in this coming fall. If her abilities are advanced enough then moving up another level would only help her in the long run. If the coach is suggesting one organization over another vs moving up a level or not then I would want to know his/her reasons. There are a few quality organizations out there and not enough space for all the kids who could use their help and coaching.

    COULD BE A GOOD MOVE

Heard of Coaches suggesting this and if it was for a spot on one of the top teams EX: Blues,Cardinals it is a great move.If not to one of the premier TT then maybe for personal reasons Ex:if a lot of the same HS kids are on the same team.Parents & player have the final say in it.:twocents:

I think that some coaches may suggest that a player play up in order to improve both the player and the program. I do not think any of us would want a varsity player on a 14 and U team. If the player moves up to 16's or 18's the player is getting prepared for the next high school season.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND HER TROOPS!!!:usa:

All valid points that is why I like the message board you can voice your own opinion...............but the question that comes to my mind is the coach trying to control the kid or is he suggesting the move for her benefit ???? I just don't like the idea of a high school coach controlling my kids life. What if the shoe was on the other foot......if she wants to play travel ball she should be able to play travel ball for whatever team she wants to play, and no coach should have say so !!!!!
