What are the rules for a coach and staff having a school team in the fall playing in tournaments ?

Are they allowed to coach their own players ?

Where does one find the rules pertaining to this ?

My son played on a fall team at his high school when he was a freshman. The rule then was the coaches could not coach the fall team. I have to assume that was a high school rule. The coaches were graduates who had played baseball at the school.

My understand of the rule: Once the next sports season starts, football etc., the HS coach can only work with a maximum of 8 players at a time. This is what keeps him from being able to coach a fall team made up of players from his own team.

IC, if there are more than 8 players from the squad, and the coach walks onto the field it is considered practice. Now I am not sure if that is illegal by itself if it happens in the "offseason". But I do know there ar rules about the number of games and the number of hours of practice you can have.

Prepster, I know you have the answer here, HELP!!!

NCHSAA Rules (Guidelines for Skills Development)

You will see many HS teams that do "stay together" and compete year-round, including in the fall when school is in session. They get around this rule by:

    1. Though the HS coaching staff may work with the players in an unlimited basis during the summer, they must follow the rules once school is in session. The HS staff normally just "attends" the games during the fall and does not "run" the team (everyone is instructed to firmly imbed their tongue in their cheek at this point).

    2. The team may not represent themselves officially as being the school team or in representing the school in any way.

    3. If HS Coaches/Assistants do work directly with "club" teams, they must abide the "dead" periods where no contact is allowed. These dead periods are normally associated with "try-outs" with other seasons sports and intervals when exams are scheduled. He is also limited to the "1 less than full team rule" even on the club team during non-dead periods ... that's why the don't normally coach club teams directly.

    4. The only exception to the rules above are baseball/softball, particularly Legion baseball which may overlap the school baseball season. It is allowable for the HS coach to coach both and to have more than 9 players from his HS team participating due to the fact that legion extends into the summer.
