    1. With the community... Do they support the team and it's coaches..
    2. HAs to have a strong youth league that teaches fundamentals and
    stresses team and community.
    3. Has to have business sponsorship and funding for Great facilities.
    4. HAs to have people envolved before their kid gets there and after thier kids leaves.
    5. The coach has to develope leaders. Teach fundamental baseball. and sell his program to the next level.
    6. Ends with the Players dreaming of wearing the team colors on Friday Night long before they are in high school.

MAny try but very few succeed.. I am very proud of RV and What he has done at Rose. That is what it takes to have a program.

It starts with feeder programs. Talented athletes must be taught physical fudamentals as well as the mental aspect. HS coaches do not have the time to teach, especially if they coach other sports. The true powerhouse teams are working out year round with their coaches guidance.

The coach must then assign proper positions and batting order. He must clearly define each players role, especially role players, to promote harmony. He must be willing to openly meet with player and parent if need be. He must be willing to discipline even the star. He should get his team involved with the community.

Leadership is mandatory. A select few players every year need to be willing to step up lead with words and by example.

Some community support will come with a lack of cotroversy and winning. More support will come if the team is socially involved in school ad community. Studets that players befriend in school clubs and activities will come to see them play. If the team is involved in the community, the people they meet there will also come see them. The you will make more at the gate, concessions ad during fundraisers.

Bingo. That's what high school ball is all about in my opinion.

All excellent points,,,,,,,,, I especially like the points about having PRIDE in the program, being known as a "baseball school", just making your stadium nice as possible, acting like a winner, etc. Pride in anything just makes folks want to do better, no matter whether we're talking sports or just driving a nice car.

Obviously a good coach at the middle school program is important,,, its a shame to see 9th graders get in high school with low baseball IQ because not only have they never played at a higher level than rec league, but the middle school coach barely knew where first base was.

Lastly, HS coaches absolutely must outline some type of offseason program for the players or insure the players are doing something. Just picking up a ball and glove Feb.15 (first day of practice) will not cut it. As a player OR coach, if your not willing to at least work as hard as your opponents, then you can't act surprised if the results aren't pleasing to you. Again whether it be baseball, golf or tiddlywinks,,, everyone knows the more successful players are the ones who simply put in the time.

    the "Five Tool" coach

    1. teaches the game the right way, both individually and as a team

    2. builds and maintains a good facility... for players and fans

    3. plays to win, is always competitive

    4. promotes his players that have the ability to continue at the next level

    5. involves himself in the area's youth leagues/teams, promotes his program within the community.

Most of these have already been mentioned, this is just a simplified list.
