At our HS we have a formula that is discussed before the season to determine the MVP. We ask each player to rank the top 5 players in order (they can count on most on and off the field). Sometimes you have to be aware of popularity issues, but most of the time if done inidivdually they will avoid that. The coaching staff then ranks in order the leaders of the team. We then use 4 stats (sacrifices, RBI's, on base percentage and fielding percentage). Each ranked number is then mulitplied by 3, 2 or 1. 3 for the coaches rank and sac's; 2 for team rank, RBI's and OBP; 1 for fielding percentage. The score is then summed and top score wins. The last stipulation is they must have played in 75% of innings for the season.
ex from last season is: 12 players so high score is 12
    coach rank 12 x 3 = 36
    sacs 12 x 3 = 36
    team rank 11 x 2 = 22
    RBI's 10 x 2 = 20
    OBP 10 x 2 = 20
    Field % 9 x 1 = 9
    Total 143

    This sounds good.

How did you come up with 10 for OBP and 9 for Fielding?
Is there any particular reason you didn't include batting avg or slugging % or errors?

The 10 and 9 came from her being 3rd and 4th on the team (12 is 1st, 11 is 2nd and so on). We chose not to use batting ave and slugging because of the slappers we have. We try to stress they to be on base however it happens. We just felt that fielding percentage would include the errors.

I agree that if you have a girl that everyone, most importantly the rest of the team, knows that without her your season would have been MUCH different, they deserve the MVP and should get it.

But, I also agree with G2G. We also preach that it is a team game and we take individual awards very seriously. We are forced to give out a certain number of awards so we usually give defense, offense, and coaches (we have made this one most improved a couple times) awards. We pick the offense and defense awards based on stats and attitude with the emphasis on attitude.

We have only given out an 'MVP' twice and both times there was no question. Everyone knew it was coming and nobody objected.

OK, thanks, that makes it clearer. Duh to me for the fielding % question!

If you left out Coach's rank and Team's rank that would eliminate anything but stats. Would that be a bad thing? Except in stats too close to call? Or maybe if you left Team's rank in?

It seems to be a very fair way to do it overall.
