First, I have my own improving to do - no doubt!
But I warned her last week that she needed to be nicer or I was dropping the lady for female.
In the end, just TMI...

Much of this gets back to the work produced by sports psychologist Drs. Thomas Tutko and Bruce Ogilvie in the 60’s &70’s.

One of the arts of coaching is to motivate your athletes to the optimum level for success that is relative to the motor performance task required. A linebacker taking on the pulling guard while filling the hole and tackling the Mack truck carrying the ball needs to be motivated to a much different level than a golfer swinging his putter where when his blade is off ¼ of a degree means he misses the hole by four inches. The good hitter, too highly motivated, now fails to recognize the spin and swings at the ball breaking into the dirt and has the average fan saying out loud “why did he swing at that”.

Sometimes, a coach can be an excellent instructor in the cage or bullpen but his athletes do not reproduce the cage or pen results on the field. The hard part is what works to motivate one athlete to the proper level is inappropriate for the next. That is why coaching is an art and not just a science where in situation A, the coaches need to do X. Find what works for each individual and then getting that athlete to the optimum level is good, finding what works for each individual and getting them to recognize how to get themselves to that place in the critical moments repeatedly, wins.

Obviously, good coaches have good players. The best coaches get their good players to perform to their peak at the right time, more often.

One of the things I like to look at in high school coaches is, “what does the coach do when he has the talent”. Do his teams make the run or are they frequently “upset” in the critical times? Over a typical public high school career, where you play with what cards are dealt to you, the talent level of your teams can be vastly different from season to season. Even losing one player can make a huge difference in your team that season. Some high school coaches are rarely in a position even to have top talent come their direction. Nevertheless, the top coaches find a way to get their players to perform to a level that their bad seasons are average and their good teams are great, and when the players are in place, they make it happen.

And if all else fails . . . just whistle.
