With some of the new conferences being combination 2A/3A or 3A/4A, i was told that if there were only 3 teams in the conference 3A the conference only gets 1 playoff berth for the 3A teams. my question is, would it be determined by the regular season finish or the conference tournament finish?

From what i have gathered the playoffs have been changed this year. The field will now consist of 48 teams instead of the usual 32 and the spots are not going to be determined by finish in the conference. The way the 48 teams are going to be picked is by the best 48 records in the state. I don't know if this has went all the way through but i would like to hear something else on this if anyone has any details.

I believe the expanded playoffs begin next season. I do not think the top 48 teams, regardless of conference finish, make the playoffs. Surely any conference champ makes it. And, isn't it up to the individual conference as to whether the champion is regular season, or tourney champ? I don't think that all conferences hold tournaments.

48 Teams will be 06-07 as per the latest info I know of... As far as the 1st question goes... Acccording to NCHSAA rules the #1 seed is the regular season Champion of a Conference. The Conference Tournament Winner is the #2 seed if it is not the regular season Champion. In a split Conference then it seems to me that the best finishing team in a classification goes to the playoffs, whether that is determined in the Conference tournament or not.

Forgive me, coach, for being a little slow. Can you help me with this scenario? In this 2A/3A split conference, there are only three 3A teams. Just one will receive an automatic berth to the playoffs. Here's the regular season finish:

    Team A 1st
    Team B 2nd
    Team C 3rd

In the conference tournament, Team C wins it with Team B finishing ahead of Team A.

So who gets the automatic berth to the playoffs? If the conference tournament is meaningless to determine the automatic bid, do you think split conferences will do away with it?

I would think that Team A in this scenario gets it... the playoff berths are based on regular season... IMHO
But does this conference recognize 2 Conference Champions, 1 for 2A and 1 for 3A, or does the NCHSAA recognize 1 2A/3A Champion? That's a different scenario to look at that needs clarification.

Has anyone gotten clarification on the split conference situations and how will state playoff births be determined?

Does anyone know what the criteria is for determing how many slots a conference gets? For example in the Coastal-8, 2 schools are 4A (Rose and New Bern) and 6 schools are 3A. I'm assuming their will be playoff entries for both the 3A and 4A playoffs out of this conference.

How many schools in the conference must there be to get 2 playoff spots, or 3 spots? Does anyone know for sure yet?
