    Fall conditioning.....

.....can you help me out on the rules that apply here?
Our HS, to my knowledge, has never gotten into the fall gig, our coach is a very important cog in the football program.
    How many kids can participate?
    Can parents be involved?
Is this fall gig part of a HS regimen? IE, if someone got hurt, would school insurance, be possible?
Is there a set time frame for fall conditioning?
I'm the proud dad of a freshman DD in HS this year, I'd love to see her on the field this fall.
Thanks for for your help TBR!

    fall conditioning

Up to one less than a full team so up to 8 at a time.
Parents can be involved and many times are the only ones running it.
Not sure about the insurance thing as this is a voluntary workout and usually not sanctioned by the schools (at least not the ones my DD went to).
Our problem was getting the girls to actually come, many had Volleyball and then went into BBall practice or just chose not to be involved.

This is my exent of knowledge on the subject

First, all conditioning has to be volentury, cannot be required, and the part of conditioning can be done by entire team or frsh. that will try out for team, here at SC the conditoning is done with the baseball team is they all do the same conditioning drill, Conditioning is done two days a week, and fundmental drills are done two day, at the fundmental drills with a coach present there can be only eight members or to be members of the team present, so we divide up and have seven per workout session.
The question that I don't know the answer to is about outside of school people leading the workouts, I do know that they kids have to have a current physical to be able to take part in the workouts(but I would think that conditoning taking place on school property they would have to be part of the staff, now that could be foorball, basketball, baseball coaches ect.)

students are covered as far as school insurance will cover them during conditioning. however, as far as parent volunteers, the rules can be read a couple of different ways. volunteer coaches come under the same rules as someone permanetly on the coaching staff, so you still cant be out there with more than eight players, you cant hold two practices a day with equipment, and you cant have one group conditioning on one field and the other group playing ball on another field at the same time. conditioning must be supervised by a permanent member of a coaching staff, and it doesnt have to be softball.....most schools i know that gear it up in the fall follow this schedule: two days conditioning, one day weight room and three days of field practice split into groups of eight (done with ease as we have girls playing tennis, golf and volleyball right now) i personally love saturday practice, as we have a complete varsity team (minus the pitcher) on the field and we get a lot done....(our volleyball and tennis coaches work with us by allowing their players to take infield with us on saturdays)

    Chez

That is about what we are doing only we just go four days per week, plus one must observe the dead periods, which I dont think there is another until the start of winter sports.
Dead periods are one thing that most people that just play travel ball dont understand, the rule is really a simple one to help schools that dont have the quanity of athletics to have enough just to be able to only play one sport, this is in place to allow all the athletics to try for the inseason sport....

    Here ya go Marlin:

Any team practice or game environment created in an OFF-SEASON
SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSION is prohibited during the 180 day school calendar.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS ARE ALLOWED, BUT SHALL NOT BE
HELD DURING ANY TRYOUT PERIOD OF AN IN-SEASON SPORT.
SESSIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED DURING THE FOLLOWING: from the start of fall sports practice to Sept. 1; from the start of winter sports practice to Dec. 1; from the start of spring sports practice to March 15.

SESSIONS ARE ALSO NOT ALLOWED DURING THE LAST FIVE STUDENT DAYS OF EACH SEMESTER. THE WEIGHT ROOM MUST
ALSO BE CLOSED DURING THE LAST FIVE STUDENT DAYS OF EACH SEMESTER.

All skill development sessions must be voluntary and open to all eligible students. AT NO TIME MAY A COACH REQUIRE OF ANY STUDENT OFF-SEASON SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS AS A MEASURE OF CONTINUED PARTICIPATION ON A TEAM. Any coachwho promotes the idea that taking part in off-season practice is required is blatantly out of compliancewith the intent and purpose of this rule.

A STUDENT MUST BE ELIGIBLE UNDER NCHSAA GUIDELINES TO TAKE PART IN OUT-OF-SEASON SESSIONS, AND THOSE INVOLVED IN OUT-OF SEASON SESSIONS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE NCHSAA CATASTROPHIC INSURANCE POLICY. Student insurance is strongly recommended for allthose involved in athletics, in- season or out-of-season.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS ARE RESTRICTED IN THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS TO ONE LESS THAN A TEAM, ON A DAILY BASIS. THERE IS NO RESTRICTION ON THE NUMBER OF COACHES WHO MAY WORK WITH THE ATHLETES. In basketball only, multiple skill development sessions may be held in a day. Two45-minute sessions are allowed in a single day for skill development (NONE during dead periods).Four players may be in one session and four different players in the other session.SEE BELOW: OFF-SEASON SKILL DEVELOPMENT WORKOUTS

SPORT NUMBER OF ATHLETES ON A GIVEN DAY
football .................... no more than 21
    golf .............................no more than 3
basketball ................ no more than 4
    softball .......................no more than 8
baseball .................... no more than 8
    wrestling ...................no more than 7
volleyball ................. no more than 5
    track ..........................no more than 6
tennis ....................... no more than 4
cross country .............no more than 4
soccer ....................... no more than 10
    swimming .................no more than 6
lacrosse .................... no more than 9
field hockey ...............no more than 10

Open facility and skill development sessions may not be held on the same day. An organizational meeting for the purpose of discussing policies, academics, distributing physical forms and the like, or equipment issue prior to the opening date of practice is allowed, but no sports instruction would be permitted in that setting. Facilities may be used for out-of-season athletic play on a strictly voluntary basis, open to all students and required of none. For safety purposes, school administrators or other school personnel should be present as supervisors of this free play. While facilities are being used for out of-season play, they may not be used for individual skill development sessions. Any individual, who coaches at an NCHSAA member high school, head or assistant, paid or non-paid, faculty or non-faculty, parent volunteer, etc., must abide by the skill development, out-of-season workout rules. If a high school coach, regardless of the sport he or she coaches at the high school, also coaches an “outside” or “club” team, whether

    121
head or assistant, and has any athletes from the high school on that outside team, he cannotwork with any of them during a dead period, and is limited to no more than the sport-specified limit of them per day in an out-of-season workout.During the summer, coaches are free to work with individual or multiple players, fromtheir school or their feeder schools, conduct practices, etc. On August 1, the fall sports seasonbegins and those restrictions are in place.Note that the sports in season should always take precedence for facility use, etc., over thosenot in season, in keeping with the philosophy of the sports season concept.Coaches coaching a team outside the sports season but during the school year (basketball, soccer, etc) must still abide by the numbers restrictions above (one less than a team). Exception:baseball/softball (Legion baseball etc) which extends into the summer.

I got what I asked for....

    ...and BTW, thanks Braves.
Now, I've read the info a couple of times, actually 5, and WOW!, I had no idea that the rules were so detailed.
I made a choice 5 yrs ago to leave my DD alone in the HS realm, and I do beleive that it was the right thing to do. Now, my 2nd DD is a freshman, and I'd like to help out with the team. I see many TB coaches affiliated with HS teams, and quite frankly, (taking nothing away from what the HS coach brings to the team), for the most part, the winning programs have alot of "volunteers". And damn good ones at that.
The last thing I want to do is get "involved" to the point that I, 'ol dad, undermines my DDs HS experience.
I also don't want to "game coach".
I just want to help our coach who gives his all.:fishing:
