    Braves-

The rules for incoming freshman are different than returners. As long as he is not a prop 48 and has been cleared through the clearing house, he is eligible to play in the spring even if he was not in college in the fall.

I guess I haven't seen lassiter and micheals play enough because even though UNC Shortstop wasn't a first rounder last year I didn't realize that these two young men were first year starters at a school that is fighting for a national championship. It's obvious Coach Fox planned on living with lassiter at short next season even as a true freshman, and now is pushing micheals graduation up to december in order to live with him at short as a high school senior. This is going to be very fun to watch and see how it works out.

By the way, Jeff clement skipped his entire senior year to enroll early at Southern Cal and started as a freshman a few years back. He then went on to be a first rounder and is starting in the big leagues for the mariners right now.

Good luck Mr. Micheals! This ain't West Forsyth or Glenn you are going up against. I hope to see him playing short in omaha in June....

It's really a pretty mature decision when you think about it.
He not only forgoes his senior season but he takes himself out of the 09 MLB
draft. Meanwhile, he gets DI experience and gets in a good summer wooden bat league and is draft-eligible a year earlier.

Baseball-wise it's a great decision for Levi and the Tar Heels. He's one of a few that can make it work.

Great deal for UNC, but not so much for the kid IMO. The biggest thing he is giving up us the possibility of being drafted high out of HS and all the money that comes with it. Some don't care about those things, but he now no longer has that option.

    a thought

we are used to seeing kids drafted out of D-I schools after their junior year. But correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the rule actually after they turn 21? Which for the vast majority of players is in their junior year.
If that's the case, and Levi will be a 17 yr old freshman, then Fox has a four year player locked up!

If the kid is dead set on going to Chapel Hill, this is a great move.
He will be draft-eligible in 2011 instead of 2012 and should have more value by being a year younger on draft day. The added bonus is that Mike Fox will sleep better this summer, knowing that he has a cornerstone player locked up. The draft process can be a major distraction even if you have no intentions of signing.

Another added benefit is that Levi will have more leverage than any other college junior on draft day 2011. MLB teams will have to respect his commitment to UNC as genuine, and realize that he just might stay for his senior season.

NVM, not getting involved in this subject. Best of luck to him.
