    Lumberton Receives Votes

Very surprised at this as Lumberton lost EIGHT starters from last years dream season. I guess after the top few teams nobody really knows much about all the teams so they just go with who they remember from the prior year. We will have two good lefty pitchers and some good young talent so it shouldn't be a disaster but they have a long way to go in a hurry to be a top 10-15 team. On the other hand, Millbrook is ranked 6th with two absolutely dominant RHPs (Brown and Dail). Have they got ANYTHING else? Whos gonna beat those two?

There are not many teams in the State that can boast a starting pitching staff of Ryan Morris (Clemson), Matt Andress (App State) and Matt Layman (Spartanburg Methodist)...all seniors for South Meck.

They will have experience, quality and depth in the infield...a very underrated catcher in Brad Marren (West Point Academy, I believe), Reid Rollinson (Spartanburg Methodist) at 3rd, Chase Austin (Elon) at SS, very good player (Dirt bag) in Doug Jones at 2nd and Wes Skidmore (UNCC-A) @ 1st.

They return a great lead off hitter in TJ Freeman in CF and the two other OF positions will be a dogfight between some very, very talented underclassmen.

South Mecklenburg just reloaded this year.

But something tells me you better watch out for Butler this year. This will be the most competitive SW4A season ever!!!!

    Great Staff

Only other pitching staff I might put up against S. Meck is Millbrook with Sam Brown (NCSU) and BJ Dail (UNC). Both hit the 90s with Brown up to mid-90s. After that, got to like Scotland Cty with four guys who can approach 90.

I agree...especially Scotland. I think you have to watch South Caldwell. They have two of the best pitcher's in the state. The reason I like the South Meck trio is because they, also, throw in the 90's with Morris LHP throwing 93+; But above the velocity is their experience. All 3 of them have pitched in HUGE games the past few years...from PG's World Woodbat Championship to the 2005 4A State Championship . The only 4A returnees that can say that, They won't get rattled in a big game.

But that's what makes the HS season so fun...all the speculation is fun, but you have to do it on the field.

I'm going with South Meck. hands down. I think they are playoff tested this year. Great pitching staff, with very good surrounding cast.

Send them to the mountains Braves on a cold March evening. Game time at 7:00 PM. 36 degrees, wind blowing about 20 mph. Kinda seperates the men from the boys, so to speak. But my press box is heated, LOL.

Hey Braves, if I remember correctly our first 2 or 3 games last year felt like we were in the mountains...The North Meck and Hope Well were 2 of the colddest baseball games I ever been to...they turned us "old men" into big babies....
