In Friday nights only game Pitt Community College beat the Hurricanes 1-0.
Did not have a Hurricanes roster but do know Seth Maness (Pincrest) pitched 4 innings of 1 hit baseball with 5 or 6 K's. Aaron Mobley (fmr. Washington) pitched 3 innings for Pitt, Brad Bagley (fmr. Farmville Central) 2 innings, Tommy Cobb (frm. Farmville) 1 and Josh Aldridge (fmr. Rose) 1. Aldridge touched 88 (throw at 84-86) with breaking ball at 72. Nice job by the Hurricanes vs a community college team. Headed back out today to catch some baseball will update later.

Found out yesterday that 9/1 thru 9/15 is a dead period. I guess anything this weekend and next is for play only. Might see you out there CP.

    Actually

    9/1 - 9/14 is a quiet period - not a dead period.

    Deads periods are:

    11/6 - 11/9/07
    1/4 - 1/8/07
    4/9 - 4/12/07

    question about showcase & football

Is it generally true that kids that play HS football do not also play showcase fall baseball? I was thinking about the time commitments and conflicts.

Here are a few of things to consider about doing both.

    1. Football practice all week. How can a student-athlete devote good time to both and perform in the classrooom too? Playning football takes a grind on you...

    2. Friday night football... You have a tough game on Friday, you either deliver or take a lot of hits and get banged up. Is it fair to your baseball career to go play in the showcase if you arent 100%. How can you be, physically and mentally? You can do more harm than good for yourself. I can see that happen before.

    3. It does depend on what position and how much you play. A starter maynot physically be able to go on Sat/Sun because he is banged up. A reserve that doesnt play much on the football team amy be okay. However my experience is that the more athletic football players / baseball players are starters at both.

I just think teh negatives and potential harm because you aren't at 100% makes it not worth teh risk in the risk vs reward dilemma.

    Just IMHO though.

    It depends on the kid.

My son played football and went to showcase/AAU baseball for nine weekends every fall for his 9th, 10th and 11th grade years. He played 4 years of varsity football and baseball starting on the baseball team all 4 years. His 9th grade year in football he was the back-up quarterback so he didn't play that much on Friday nights but he was the starter his next 3 years. This is a load for any kid to undertake as well as the parent. It definately has to be the kids decision and he is the one that has to have the desire and commitment to do it. His football coach didn't know he was doing it and I don't know what his attitude would have been about it. You leave from a football game on a Friday night about 10:30 or 11pm and drive to say Florence, SC and get checked in your hotel around 1:30 or 2am and as luck would have it your first baseball game on Saturday is aways at 8 or 9am. You then have another game that afternoon and then one on Sunday, that requires outstanding conditioning and motivation. Luckily my son was 6'4" and 220lbs. and competed in the PAC VI 4-A conference so he took the beating every Friday night pretty well considering everything, but I could tell on several of those early morning games he wasn't quite where he would have been if he hadn't of played football the night before and had to do most of his sleeping in the truck on the way to the hotel. He even came to me before his senior year last year and said he didn't want to do the fall ball that time on his own. It can be done, I know from experience, but I think the kid has to be an exceptional athlete to succeed in both at that level. As Coach 26 stated athletes at that level are usually starters at both. As far as their school work suffering it's again totally up to the character and dedication of the kid. Kids at this age can always find distractions to doing their school work even if their not involved in any extracurricular activites.
As it worked out my son was actually being recruited by more schools for football than baseball, but baseball was always his first love and that's what he chose to concentrate on in college.
I would like to hear MLB Scouts thoughts on this topic.

    Dirtbags 7 Mid-Atlantic Red Sox 6

Dirtbags pitching: McSwain (from younger team) 4 innings 0 runs 1 hit 3 K's
    Greg Holt (W. Forsyth) 3 innings 6 runs 3 hits 4 K's 2 BB

Dirtbags jumped out 7-0 after 3 innings and coasted for the win. Holt hurt by his teams defense ( 4 errors) in his three innngs on the mound. Did give up a 3 run bomb to dead center to cut the game to 7-6 in the 7th.

Leading hitters: Zeke Blanton (East Rutherford) 2 run HR
Quincy Latimore (Middle Creek) 2 hits

    10:30 at Guy Smith

Dirtbags 6 Carroll Co. Rangers 5 (Md.)

    Dirtbags pitching: Seth Simmons (Calvary Baptist) 6 innings 5 runs 8 hits 9 K's Garrison Lassister (Ledford) 1 inning 1 K 3 up / 3 down

Dirtbags fell behind 4-0 given up 3 hits, making 3 errors and 3 BB's in the first four innings. Lassister 1b to lead off the 5th, Holt 1b, Henson 2b and Wallace 1b to get things going. In the 6th Ben Bunting (Randleman) rbi 1b to make it 3-5. Top of 7th Lassiter leads off with a HR, Holt 1b, Henson 1b, score on 1st/3rd steal, Blanton sac. fly to right to score Henson with go ahead run. Lassister came on and pitched the bott. of the 7th 3 up / 3 down.

    Cubs 1 Tidewater Whitesox 1 after 3 1/2 when I called it a day.

Cubs pitching: Joe Wagstaff (East Wake) 2 innings 1 run 2 hits 2 K's
    Zach Furl (Lee Co.) 2 innings 0 runs 0 hits 3 K's 1 BB

Cubs scored in the 2nd inning on a Trent Whithead (Washington) 3B to deep center to tie the score at 1-1.

Overall a ton of baseball talent present with several pro scouts, junior college coaches and the ECU staff on a nice fall weekend.
