The Sox were short-handed this weekend due to 3 injuries and a sore-armed pitcher but nonetheless turned in some pretty good performances thanks to the fine support of some players from the Red Sox 17U team.

    Saturday:

    Fungo Red Sox: 9
    Carolina Stingers:1
(I was late for this one at RJR, no particulars here)

    *************************************
    Fungo Red Sox 2
    South Charlotte Panthers 2
    @ Wake Forest
After 6 innings the score was 1-0, SCP, with starters Robby Gurley (sr. -Fungo/NW Cabarrus, a 5-hitter, 85-90 mph) and Kyle Greenwalt (jr. - SCP/Souderton, PA, a no-hitter, 85-88 mph) in a pitcher's duel .Micheal Melton, (jr. - East Rutherford) had the game's only RBI up to that point. In the 7th, Jack Lane (so. - Fungo/Hopewell) and Zach Parmer (sr. - SCP/C.Cabarrus) took over on the hill. Fungo struck first with a 2 RBI double in the 8th from Garrett Braun (so. -Lake Norman) only to see SCP tie it in the 9th on a passed ball/wild pitch. I believe Eric Sommerville (sr. - Providence) had two hits for the Panthers.

    S.Charlotte Panthers 000 100 001 -2
    Fungo Red Sox (18U) 000 000 010 -2

    a great day for baseball!!!

    **************************************
    Sunday:

    Fungo Red Sox 5
    Florence Red Wolves 4
    (8 innings)
    @High Point U.

Winning pitcher Patrick Sherrill (sr. - North Meck) once again turned in a solid performance on the hill for the Sox giving up only 1 run in 7 innings. Jack Lane got the save. Eric Shinn (sr. - Pinecrest) who pitched well, was the hard-luck loser for the Red Wolves giving up only 1 earned run.

Who threw for the Dirtbags 07's

I saw the first game at High Point University on Saturday and saw Greg Holt (West Forsyth 07) throw the first 7 innings. I was amazed that scouts from Clemson, Elon, High Point were all there watching that game. He was 89-91 throught but struggled with control early. He gave up 1 earned run (3 errors in 1st inning) and stuck out 9. He had a hard breaking cuveball that was keeping hitters off stride. David Mailman (Providence 07) came in the 8th and 9th inning and threw well but gave up 2 runs on a couple of hits. He was 84-86 with great movement on the ball. The Whitley kid from VA. (Virginia Tech signee) threw the last 4 inning for the NC Baseball Academy. He threw upper 80's but minimal off speed. Small in staure but throws well. Game ended up 4-3 the Academy but well played game after the Dirtbag 1st inning errors. Any clue on which players all the scouts were looking at for that game? The 18U Dirtbags played the game before. I am thinking they may have been looking at some of there players also. Any idea out there where Holt and Mailman are looking at schools?

I heard that Lee Oxidine, Trent Rothlin, and Blake Hasebrock threw later in the day and Sunday for the Dirtbags. I don't know scores or performance.
