Andy Partin continues his coverage of North Carolina baseball with a detailed profile of East Forsyth rising senior pitcher Ryan Basham. It was a great report and much deserved.

    Impact Baseball

Ryan continued his solid Spring and Summer last night with a must win for Kernersville over High Point's Post 87 to even that series 2-2.

Yes, it was...but getting back to Ryan Basham. The kid has immense talent and his projectability is awesome. He is one of the best pitchers in the State....and he has recently signed up with the Braves Inc. organization. So, anybody who has plans of drafting or marketing this young man next year, must go through TBR's marketing dept.....

    Original,
That was a good article on Kyle Shelton as well. I got to see a little of him at the State Games and it seems like he got a lot of attention for the way he plays the game. He has a great pair of hands on defense.

    Braves,
Projectability is sometimes hard to quantify, especially with a kid who is still 16 and far from reaching his physical maturity, but you're right, with Basham it is easy to see.

Last year at this time, he was topping out at 84. This year he hit 91 against Durham-Riverside and has been all around 90 several other times. Even more critical to developing as a real pitcher instead of just another good arm, is the fact that Ryan's control has improved right along with his velocity. He's gone from averaging 6 or 7 walks per 7 innings to 3 walks per this year. He still has his ugly games every once in a while but consistency has become one of his primary goals and strengths. During this past winter, Ryan also developed a solid 12/6-ish curve along with a quality change. I think he's benefited from working personally with Myrtle Beach Pelican's pitcher Alec Zumwalt over the winter as they will do again this coming winter. He's also benefited from having supportive parents(especially NC-dad's wife!!!....j/k) who help keep reality and priorities in proper perspective.

Ryan has definitely worked his tail off to get to where he is at right now and even more importantly, he is down-to-earth enough to realize he has a lot of work ahead of him before he achieves his real goals. Baseball is truly his passion with being a normal teenager a close 2nd. He's an easy guy to root for.
