Who are some of the better pitching instructors in NC???

Who are some of the the better hitting instructors in NC???

What makes these instructors some of the better ones in our state??? Is it the results their pitchers have? Is it the number or kids they work with? Is it the number of years they have been instructing? Is it because they were a good player?

I got to thinking about this after hearing what Cheri Kempf had to say in Myrtle Beach about all the so called "pitching instructors" in our game. This easily applies to hitting as well though.

This post is to stimulate thought process and analysis. Not to ruffle feathers or being emotional like I see some post tend to get on this board.

I think that what really makes a good instructor is the ability to communicate with the student. Being able to show as well as teach is the utmost importance. Looking like a role model is up there also, as your students will look up to you if your good.

I'll use UNCC's Jim Daley as an example: My dd went to Jim with physical problems (elbow, shoulder and wrist). She also seemed to have a mental block on throwing the curve and rise. One lessons with this man and I knew we had a perfect match. He had the ability to tell her why you have to hold it "this" way, why the spin made it move "this" way, why you had to finish "this" way and took it farther and taught her "when" you wanted to throw this ball. He also taught her "core" conditioning as a pitcher and how important it was. Our hour sessions often went 2 hours with intense discussions on mechanics and spin.

Too me, as a parent and coach, you have to be able to back up what you're trying to teach, and Coach Daley could definately throw what he was trying to teach. But it was his mannerism that seperated him from others, he treated his students as adults, taking the time to make sure they understood what he was trying to teach, and if not, showed no emotion (as in flustration or throwing hands up), and he changed his approach to suit his student in an effort to get through.

A good instructor becomes a part of your family.

A great instructor is one who never has a bad word to say about a former student. When asked, they will often make the statement: " I COULDNT" vs "SHE COULDNT". In other words, they never have a bad comment for a former student or player and we definately need more of that. Coach Dobbins, Coach Sharon, Chief and the late Steve Cagel fall in the great catagory and i'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones i've been exposed too.

    Adrian Gantt

I would like to add Adrian Gantt from Catawba college. My dd was in a slump when we first went to her. Ms. Gantt asked me to walk around or just "disappear" for a while so she could talk with my dd. She talked with her about her goals and dreams and how much she was willing to give to put her dreams into reality. We would show up an hour or two before practice to let her workout with Adrian or another member of her staff. During this time my daughter came to know the Lord, worked two missions trips, learned to hit again, and learned to live other than softball.

    i've got two

As far as pitching instructors, i will decline to comment since i am totally biased. But i would like to throw a couple of local hitting instructors out. Ronnie Plemmons at North Davidson-one of the most disciplined hitting instructors i've ever seen. Will work with anyone that shows up and asks and can break a swing down like nobodies business and totally has those kids buying into a system that works.
Ben McKinney-West Forsyth-Carlina Cardinals-my two haven't had the fortune of working with Ben enough, but if there's ever any doubt just watch his daughters hit. Also seen him do some remarkable things with some other kids.

    Pitching Coach...

Pitching Coach Dave Perkins, I nominate him because he knows how to break down each pitch so that even a beginner can understand what the pitch does and why. He also throws each pitch to show his pitchers what it is supposed to look like! He knows when to be tough and when to be fun! He knows how to make a pitching lesson educational, interesting and fun! He relates really well to the pitchers and lets them know that he believes in them, while giving them realistic expectations. He is in the Concord/Mt. Pleasent area. I would recommend him as a pitching coach. We tried a few other instructors along the way, per his advice, but my DD always ended up back with Dave! Yes she learned things from the other pitching instructors, but she never had the bond and trusting relationship that she had with Dave. Dave Perkins, is whom she believes to be her wizard! She is a freshman in college this year, as a pitcher on a softball scholarship! Thanks Dave!!! You Da Bomb!!!

    Hitting instructor

Melissa Hurley of UNCC is giving hitting lessons to my DD & 4 other girls on her team. She breaks down the swing and explains why each part is important in a way that even this old baseball player can understand. All 5 girls have raised their bat average and lowered their strikeouts. I would recomend her to anyone.

    Yea

She is a good one for sure. She has helped UNCC get more aggressive at the plate and to look for their pitch as well. Good hire by Coach Amy! Hey and that young man she has as a pitching coach, ain't bad either! Go Jim:freak:

    Coach Windmiller.....

...in my opinion is one of the most knowledgable fastpitch teachers period. I grew up, the son of a Dad who played in the MLB, coached in the minors, and then started Babe Ruth Org. in Ral. NEVER a day passed that Dad taught us something about the game. But heres the real kicker!.....everything 'ol Pops preched about batting, fielding, throwing, and THINKING still translates to what our DDs are playing now! Its hard for people "who think they know" to realize that there exist "instructors that DO know"! Charlie knows!
