    It's too quiet in here!

I believe in baseball it's pretty much accepted that you might put yourself in a situation to get beaned. What is your opinion on intentionally hitting a batter with a pitched ball in fastpitch?

Just like in baseball a softball pitcher may have to take back or establish the inside corner of the plate. They may have to hit a hitter in order to do so, but that doesn't mean it is intentional. A pitcher must be willing to pitch inside if a batter is crowding the plate. I have noticed a trend at the college level of batters staying off the plate more. No doubt this is because pitchers that can throw 65+ will stay in on their hands if they crowd the plate...just my opinion.

    Intentional....unacceptable.
    Do batters get hit? Yes
Do pitchers have to challenge inside? Yes

    But intentional...........

I would hope that a pitcher would never intentionally hit a batter, but it does happen. The inside corner is as much the pitcher's as it is the hitter's.

Sure it happens. Ive seen it in defense of a fellow player but cant imagine it being done just to get the inside corner.

Intentionally getting hit? Oh, yeah. Remember Chelsie Parrish from Durham Jordan and NC Challengers? Chelsie would crowd the plate and intentionally get hit on the next inside pitch. She had it down pat--looked like she was trying to get out of the way every time. And then once she was on base you couldn't throw her out stealing 2nd.

intentional??? yeap, have seen it for last 12 years. some pitching coaches teach their students to peg someone crowding the plate, you have to remember, that any portion of your body that is inside the strike zone, such as hands, forearms, elbows, is fair game. a few years ago, in our preseason meeting with the umpires in hs ball, they informed us that they would be using this rule and enforcing it to stop the batters from intentionally getting hit. my dd had dixie cup control, and set her person worst record that year with 24 batters hit, but only three made it to base, the rest were called strikes.

my point is that the strike zone belongs to the pitcher, thats how they're taught, if you stick anything in the strike zone, its just another target. i dont agree totally with the intentional thing, but i also see the opposite view of the pitcher owning the strike zone.

note: my dd teaches this to her students now.....

did you get the number of that truck?

Funny how you of all people would post something about getting beaned with a ball (or a bat). Did you know they make pitching screens?

    Not intentional but..

One of my favorites is when the parents in the stands, or sometimes the coach in some subtle or not so subtle way, is telling the batter where the catcher is setting up (i.e., outside). Happens alot at the 12-14u level, where catchers are setting up a little too early. Anyway, we had a special pitch call for that one when the batters started leaning out over the plate. Set up outside, throw inside...and if they end up getting hit, well, learn the lesson. I've heard coaches tell the players on the bench to yell to the batter, "go with it", if the catcher sets up outside, or, "turn on it", when the catcher sets up inside. Coaches can be pretty sneaky looking for that advantage...
