Talking to a guy at the neighborhood country store....He knows I coach.

    He asked me the following:

As a coach/parent, which would you rather have....

A star athlete who was right around average in the classroom, average practice effort, mouthy, disrespectful, maybe a bit unreliable, but delivered on game day. But:sifone: 100% chance scholarship material....

Or a kid who worked their butts off at practice, great student, great person, very respectful to all but was middle of the road as an athlete. Contributor but maybe a small college prospect for playing a sport in college, or maybe even not getting recruited....

As a parent, would choose the latter all day every day. One day the sports career is going to be over and the kids are going to have to function in life.

    Thoughts??

You have to debate this? I would like to meet the parent who would choose the former as opposed to the latter, or then again maybe I wouldn't.

    tough cut

Coaches, correct me if I am wrong on this next statement. The below-described kid is the one that is really hard to put on the bench in lieu of the one that delivers well but also puts out less effort overall (middle of the road as an athlete):
" a kid who worked their butts off at practice, great student, great person, very respectful to all but was middle of the road as an athlete. Contributor but maybe a small college prospect for playing a sport in college, or maybe even not getting recruited.... "
NOTE: former Albemarle HS & NCSU star running back TA McClendon came to mind when I read the first description of the "star athlete who was right around average in the classroom, average practice effort, mouthy, disrespectful, maybe a bit unreliable, but delivered on game day. But:sifone: 100% chance scholarship material

I can live with being average in the classroom, but I do not believe there are many coaches who are going to put up with a player being disrespectful and unreliable.

    Well since you asked.....

chachacha, I do not mean to pick on you, but there are disrespectful brats playing starting positions all over this country! You would be amazed! Most of the time their Daddy coaches the team their on! Just had to give my opinion on that one!
I as a parent and a coach would much rather have an average student, hard working, respectful kid who will give me 100% try everytime! But then I am not a person who buys into this "win at any cost" theory!
A star athlete who was right around average in the classroom, average practice effort, mouthy, disrespectful, maybe a bit unreliable, but delivered on game day. But:sifone: 100% chance scholarship material.... Comes with luggage, like parents who think that their little "spawn of ugly" can do no wrong and you had better not point out anything they did wrong! We all know someone like this and we all know how it feels to be trapped on a team with them! Just say NO!!!! If I have said it a million times, I will say it again, teach the little PREMA DONNAS how to act in public before you bring them away from home! When you encourage that behavior, you are not only, not doing that kid any good, but in a sense you are punishing everyone else on that team, by having to deal with that kid, and punishing the parents by them having to deal with the parents of that kid! Just say NO!!!!
A kid who works their butt off at practice, great student, great person, very respectful to all, but is middle of the road as an athlete, actually contributes a lot more than you think to a team. Contributor but maybe a small college prospect for playing a sport in college, or maybe even not getting recruited.... What is wrong with a small college? Nothing!!! A team full of players who work their butts off, are great students, great people, very respectful makes up one hell of a team IMO!!! As a coach and I loved it when I had that!! It made coaching so much more enjoyable! As a parent I loved being around a team full of great kids ands parents that had respect for each other and others! As an observer I would still rather talk to nice, respectful people than "know it all", butts, that can't be wrong and don't know how to discipline their kids! That is just a NIGHTMARE for everyone involved!!!!
Just MO please do not throw burning arrows at me!
