Since the corners in softball play much closer to the batter than in baseball, I wonder if the prof's opinion would be the same for softball??

UNC professor testifies at hearing on metal bat ban

A U-N-C professor testifying at a hearing in New York on a proposed ban on aluminum bats says baseball is an extremely safe sport overall.

Frederick Mueller, a professor of exercise and sports science, is also the director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research.

Mueller told the City Council that a study conducted by national governing body U-S-A Baseball covering all amateur baseball from youth leagues through college found that the risk of catastrophic injury was approximately one in one million.

Mueller says the study was conducted from 1989 through 2005. He told council members that it has to be careful when making decisions based on anecdotal evidence.

City Council members called for a ban on metal baseball bats in New York high schools.

I wonder how baseball and softball injuries compare to say soccer, rugby, football, basketball, etc. Also wonder how the media hype influences the politcians and the average america family's thoughts on sports. Do we over-react to one serious injury out of a million? What about driving a car? Using a curling iron in the bathroom right by a sink of water? Walking across a busy street? I could go on and on but we tend to find danger where danger does not really exist!:lalala:

    injuries

According to Dateline a few months back, our emergency rooms see more cheerleaders than all the other sports combined. So you just never know.

    too close

I often wonder why some 3rd basemen in softball play in close for bunt ALL THE TIME; even when the situation does not dictate bunt & when a POWER hitter is up.

sometimes it just looks stupid, & very dangerous.

everyone of us has seen a game where a 100 to 120 mph line drive has gone right past the pitchers ear. Some of us been witness to much scarier scenarios. There are serious injury possibilities in every sport but projectiles of this size and this force put lives at risk and we have ALL been witness to it. Maybe we should thank the almighty for keeping a lot of these kids safe to this point and continue to pray that he does so.

From a hitting standpoint I would like to see my daughter swing a 1OO MPH bat but from a safetey standpoint I am glad she cannot anymore.

    Bats

I know you have heard me fuss bout officiating some, but being a pitchers dad, that is why I feel so strongly about strike zones. If the umpires would call proper strike zones (armpit to knees) both sides of plate,(black included) this would offset some of the hot bats. You work on hitting corners, & your spots to come into a game where the ump makes you throw it down the middle, or close.I will never forget the blue who was with USSSA,who said "if you're wanting a walk to 1st, get your batbag & start walking home."I also saw an ump one time put dirt on the middle of plate. I ask what he was doing, & he replied that he could see the middle easy, but wanted to see them corners, & that helped him. But I guess we all know I favor the pitchers umps. LOL
