A lot of peole don't know this but the majority of speed guns pick up one of two things, the kids arm movement or release point speed. Which guns actually record the true speed when crossing the plate ???

There are a few others that do both

Jugs has a new gun and Stalker. Jugs use to be made by Decatur and now they are made by Stalker. I purchased the new Jugs and it works well.

    New Jugs Gun

Yes, the new Jugs radar gun (made by Stalker) has both peak and "roll down" speeds. Both speeds are shown in the LCD display simultaniously. The peak is the speed leaving the pitchers hand and the "roll down" speed is the last speed read (crossing the plate). The new gun retails for $799 or so.

This is something I've alway wanted to see

not bad enough to part with $1K though. Charlie, while I know there are a number of variables involved if we're talking a straight fastball of a kid that throws 65 on jugs gun what is the common release velocity vs the speed at the plate? What is the speed decrement for breaking stuff. My years on the bucket suggest that the greatest decrement would be on the rise and the least on the drop. What have you found?

    Another Option

Another option in this arena is the Rev-Fire Softball package. It measures speed via calculating distance over time. Therefore it shows exactly what the batter sees as far as speed and actual reaction time. I takes into account the pitcher's stride and any ball movement. It also measures the spin rate on the ball. Very effective training aid in measuring speed and increasing spin rate for breaking pitches.
