    Standing out

When my son played with the "bags", they had, what I called, the "clown uni's". Clemson orange, Tarheel blue and white. The hats had all three colors. Hideous? Maybe... Noticeable? Every time they took the field everyone knew who was playing! The kids loved it!

    Big games tonite

The Canes and Dirtbags both make it to the Quarterfinals and play at 7:40 tonite with hopes of making it to the semi-finals in the morning. Good Luck. They are on opposite sides of the brackets so can only meet in the Championship game!

    Results

Canes 4-1 (still alive in final 8)
Dirtbags 4-1 (still alive in final 8)
Panthers 3-2 (lost in first round of playoffs - tie for 9th)
On Deck 0-1-3 (eliminated in pool play)

The NC results never seem to change. Very predicatable.

    Games are underway this morning

Semi: Canes vs Chet Lemon Juice......Jordan Ramsey (UNCW-North Davidson HS) on the hill and he strikes out the side in the first inning. End of 2 innings no score as Ramsey strikes out 2 more Lemons. Bright sunny day in Florida. Ramsey strikes out two more in the 3rd inning BUT a walk in the inning came around to score the first run of the game as Chet's guys get back to back singles to score the walk. 1-0 Juice ahead. CLJ is threating big time with runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out and a pinch hitter delivers a two run knock, Canes now down 3-0.......a triple drives in the 4th run of the game. Evan Beal coming to the hill to try and stop these Lemons from breaking the game open. GOSH...Beal walks the first two batters he faces to load the bases so Josh Sborz is summoned from the pen to try and put out this raging fire. Sborz walks in a run as the Juice is starting to turn into Champagne!! A single drives in the 6th run and once again the Canes coach makes the long walk to the bump to bring Patrick Corbett into the game. Rough rough inning to say the least as Mizuno gets 2 more to make it 8-0 at the end of 5 innings and the game is called on the run rule. Chet Lemon Juice pitcher Thomas Renda throws his second 1 hit shutout of the tournament. Chet Lemon Juice 8 Canes 0

Semi: Dirtbags vs Mizuno Cardinals Scout Team.....Bags facing lefty Henry Owens (Aflac All American from Californina) throwing 92 mph gas...Mikal Hill singles in the first inning as Bags have bases loaded two outs but a strikeout ends the inning. Dylan Dickens ready to take the mound in the bottom of the first. These kids are on the Mizuno team: Aflac All-Americans Tyler Marlette (2011, Oviedo, Fla.), Francisco Lindor (2011, Clermont, Fla.), Henry Owens (2011, Huntington Beach, Calif.), DeShorn Lake (2011, Newport News, Va.) and Jose Fernandez (2011, Tampa, Fla.)
Dickens sets down the Cardinals 1-2-3.......we move to the 2nd inning. Seth Constable walks and ends up being stranded at 3rd base. Once again Dickens goes 1-2-3 including getting big man Daniel Vogelbach to ground out.
Mikal Hill walks and Brett Austin singles Bags on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.....Umpire gets Adam Griffin looking for 2nd out. Ground out ends the inning.......Cardinals finally get a baserunner but he is quickly doubled up on a great throw by Peter Hendel to first after a caught fly ball. Bags don't score in their half inning. Mizuno now goes to the small ball and Dickens can't handle the bunt which is then followed by a single so Cardinals have 1st and 2nd no outs...WOW the Bags turn a double play and Dickens K's the next batter to end the inning. 0-0 tie at the end of 4 innings. Dirtbags go down in order in the 5th...Vogelbach, who is compared to Prince Fielder, walks to lead off the inning for the Cards BUT once again the Bags turn two on a 1-6-3 play. Flyout ends the inning. What a game as Dickens has been outstanding. Mikal Hill leads off the inning with a base hit and Brett Austin walks. Adam Griffin at the plate no outs. Griffin flys out, Hendel hits into a fielders choice so runners 1st and 3rd with two outs and Hunter Bryant at the plate and draws a walk to load bases for Constable. Swinging dribbler scores the first run of the game!! bases still loaded and George Carter up to bat. A great catch by the right fielder ends the inning as the Dirtbags take a 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth. Dickens gets two groundouts to start the inning.....before giving up a single...2-2 count here comes the sidearm pitch.....batter K's. Crowd is so nervous they can't even clap for joy!!! Bags go down quickly in the 7th to try and keep the Mojo going for Dylan Dickens as he runs to the mound to try to end this exciting game. A strikeout and first base unassisted grounder for the first 2 outs....a 6-3 putout ends the game and the Bags move on to the Championship game. Dirtbags 1 Mizuno Cardinals Scout Team 0

Stay tuned for the Championship game which means I won't not be able to go out to lunch today as my buddy Benton Moss should get the start at 11:30. Wife bringing me a Subway sandwich so I will be good to go!

    Thanks for the Coverage

Makes up for not being there. What an exciting time for those young student-athletes.

I've been covering this group of prospects for years for Inside Carolina and thought they were something special - now they can prove it to the whole country!

As far as missing lunch - whenever you are in Chapel Hill (or Pittsboro) for that matter - hit me up and lunch (or dinner) is on me at the Carolina Brewery!
