    I hear ya dukedog4

You hit it. I know several girls who can't get enough softball whether they are playing (which is what they prefer) or watching other local teams and/or games on TV.

Can't wait for the college playoffs to begin. Lots of games and coverage on ESPN.

Also as nctiger said, there seems to be more teams this year without a JV team. There are three in our conference which only has 7 teams total...

I guess it depends on level of interest at the school.

We had well over 30 girls try out for both teams (tryouts were held together). There were 15 girls selected for each roster. There were girls who could play who didn't make either roster. For the first time in three years, there are no middle schoolers playing.

A nearby historical powerhouse school (Hillcrest) I has, I think, a total of about 20 girls on both rosters, with more than a few playing back and forth. This is with two 8th graders on varsity (who, again, aren't allowed to play JV by district rule).

My daughter has some interest in watching Team USA and some college softball on TV, but would much rather be playing.

    AWESOME

BOLO2.... I LOVE that pic of the team addressing the flag. Gives me goose bumps.

    Eligibility?

Isn't there a hard rule about only having four years of HS eligibility? In other words, do Middle School players who play on a Varsity team lose a year of playing while they are actually in HS? Is that really worth it? How do you/they decide which year to skip?

    Palmetto State?

don't know for sure but I think this is referring to something that is allowed in South Carolina, not NC.

    sounds silly really.

4 years while in HS, but you can get two "bonus" years

But as far as I can tell from the SCHSL Constitution, you can play 6 years of varsity starting at 7th grade.

In SC, you may not be 19 by the July 1st before the school year (VII.1.A), or have played 4 years since starting to play as a 9th grader (VII.6.B).

    Wow

I didn't know the rules were different in other states. I thought there was one big rule book (kind of insane now that I think about it...) for HS/NCAA. Are there specific rules that can be different between states or are they all subject to whomever wrote the book for that state?

There are sports rule books written by a National Association (the National Federation of High School Associations, or NFHS, see NFHS.ORG). The states can decide not to use these rules at all or use only part of them.

However, I don't think the NFHS tries to setup anything like most of the stuff in the SCHSL Consitution and bylaws. Things like eligibility, number of contests, playoff structure, regions, divisions, etc.

For one thing, the various HSL's seem to have to put up with their local legislatures (at least the SCHSL does) wanting to stick their nose into stuff (witness the furor over the last millisecond basket in the championship Basketball game: a bill was introduced in the SC House to require instant replay in 4A Championship Football and Basketball games) like this.

    odd

so in SC, a player could set a sports record in 4 yr's of varsity play and then another player comes along that plays 6 years of varsity and breaks the record?? sounds pretty odd.

do they not have middle school sports?
