King and His Court mid 1970s story

As a little guy I watched my father face Eddie Feiner (sp?) in the mid to late 70s in Penndel, PA in front of 2,500 fast-pitch softball fans. My father played for Marek's Cafe out of Hulmeville, PA. The King struck my father out from second base blind-folded.....the routine went like this....the King asked what did my father look like...the catcher described my father's hieght and weight and the King said no problem. About 4-5 pitches later my father had swung through the fastball, drop and rise balls.....the King could bring it is all I remember. My father says he was trying not to strike out but he said the King was special from the mound.....Yes, there were at least that many fans there on this special night. It was great family entertainment for a couple bucks and they passed the hat around for more--most obliged.

3 generations of my family have played against the King and his Court. My father in the 60s, I in the late 70s and mid 80s and when I had them come to Oxford for a fund raiser for Oxford Orphanage in 2002 or 2003, my son caught for me. Although my son didn't get to face 'The King', Rich didn't have any trouble with him. This was a year or so after Eddie's stroke and he was doing the commentary while Rich and Eddie's wife (Mary Anna?) did the pitching. One of the things I'll remember most about that time was one of our guys at bat, with 2 strikes, and Eddie told Rich that he had promised the guy a basehit. So Rich had the guy hold the bat out over the plate and from 50 feet away, Rich hit that bat with a fastball and the ball rolled into fair territory! Amazing! I still have 3 or 4 balls that the King autographed and gave to me. The other thing I'll never forget is Eddie calling me to the Hotel so we could 'just talk'. We spent an hour together in the lobby of that Hotel just talking about what it used to be like when he was younger and the places he had been.

The last 100 games of the King and his Court....

We have seen 9 presidents, the invention and demise of the 8 track, cars go from gas to electric, and played before over 20,800,000 fans, over 4900 cities worldwide in 104 countries. Gastonia will be on the list that saw the "Court" on it's last tour.....

I have been out for over a week now, having played in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi the last few days. We play in the Tampa area tonight, then Daytona Beach on Weds, then Disney World on Thursday. Look forward to Charlotte on Saturday.
