    It's nothing new. The school's feel they need to lock up a player before their competitors. It creates more excitement for the underclass tournaments as more scouts are attending.

    The colleges clearly benefit the most; However, three main points that benefit the player:

    - He is going to the school of his dreams
    - He will have no recruiting pressure during his final HS seasons (don't underplay the importance of this.)
    - It will be the best offer he will receive. Schools that tie up early commits always give their best offer.

    When this trend first started, I thought it was crazy. Why would a family give all their leverage away when it clearly skews the greater benefit to the schools. What I have found is that schools honor their offers despite an injury to a player or no real improvement in the player. However, one will find the players that get early offers tend to be some of the best players with a work ethic that guarantees improvement.

    I remember Wake Forest offered a scholarship to Chris Leak (Independence HS QB).....in the 8th grade.
